About this listen

A young sergeant, recovered from battle against Rommel's Afrika Korps, is appointed leader of a dozen know-it-all draftees being poured into the Army's replacement pool. He toughens them into an effective team. As they land at Utah Beach, the Wehrmacht hands out its own bloody lessons. In minutes, one is dead and a second wounded, the onset of a pitiless 10-month ordeal.

In horrific combat from Normandy through the Bulge to the Elbe River, they learn to defeat a skilled and hardened enemy. All pay a steep price.

A nice one

I love world war 2 stories and this one was very interesting. It had action romance and everything in between. I hated “The Dick” and hoped he was killed by one of the Germans but the boys in Burma will get him.

A great balance between history and story

I have read and studied many World War II military history books over the years telling the story of the United States Army from Normandy to ultimate victory in Germany. This novel seems as accurate as any of those histories. But by telling this story once again through the experiences at one small unit, a mortar squad, it is really unique. The novel follows the story of the fictional “band of brothers” through enlistment, training, shipping overseas, the waiting in England, D-Day, the race accross France, to final victory in Germany. The fictional characters seem very real and through them readers experience “the war” far more intimately then In any non-fiction account I’ve read. This book is highly recommend!

How the narrator described the details of the soldier

I didn’t dislike anything. This was a good listen and quite enlightening. Great job on the audible.

Fantastic job with realism

Outstanding melding of reality with a fascinating perspective from a real grunt. The horrors of combat combined with a real person. Truly terrific.

Great book, not a typical war story!

The author has written a great love during a war book. Not your typical shootem up, but enough to make the most battle harden veteran satisfied. I highly recommend this book!

Entertaining enough.

Narration is clear.

An ok story. Not a waste of time. My bias favoring nonfiction probably dampens my enthusiasm for this novel.
