Publisher's summary
If you think we are doomed, think again: We can meet our environmental challenges and build a brighter future with clean technology.
Up until now, human progress and prosperity has come at a terrible cost to the natural world. Everywhere we look we see environmental devastation, and the looming threat of climate change casts our very future into doubt. Many believe our only option is to make massive cutbacks, to downgrade prosperity, to shrink the global economy by half or more. But this would only exchange an ecological catastrophe for a social one. If we truly face a no-win scenario, is it any wonder pessimism is so widespread?
Brighter explains that a very different future lies ahead of us. Adam Dorr is an environmental scientist, technology theorist, and Director of Research at the renowned think tank RethinkX. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Dorr explains that technological disruptions are already underway that will radically transform energy, transportation, food, and labor. The clean new technologies will wipe out older, dirtier technologies, foster unprecedented prosperity, and open the door to mitigating environmental impacts and restoring ecological integrity at a planetary scale – including solving climate change.
With clear explanations based on the pioneering work of RethinkX, Brighter offers an antidote to pessimism and false hope by giving us compelling reasons for optimism grounded in data, challenging us to reimagine environmentalism for the 21st Century.

The media can't stop talking about the gridlock in Washington, as if a handful of stubborn Republicans are the only thing standing between us and a fully-functional democracy. The reality is that our government was taken over by big business and their allies in both political parties. The getaway driver in this heist was corporate media. The good news is that the American people are very progressive. And soon progressives will take over Washington as well! And when they do, the great majority of Americans will love it.

Marx and Engels were right when they observed in the Communist Manifesto that free markets had in a short time created greater prosperity and more technological innovation than all previous generations combined. A century and a half later, all the evidence shows that capitalism has lifted millions and millions from hunger and poverty. Today's story about global capitalism, shared by right-wing and left-wing populists, but also by large sections of the political and economic establishment, does not deny that prosperity has been created, but it says it ended up in far too few hands.

We live in an extraordinary time. Technological advances are happening at a rate faster than our ability to understand them, and in a world that moves faster than we can imagine, we cannot afford to stand still. These advances bring efficiency and abundance - and they are profoundly deflationary. Our economic systems were built for a pre-technology era when labor and capital were inextricably linked - an era that counted on growth and inflation and an era where we made money from inefficiency.

Nick Bostrom lays the foundation for understanding the future of humanity and intelligent life. The human brain has some capabilities that the brains of other animals lack. It is to these distinctive capabilities that our species owes its dominant position. If machine brains surpassed human brains in general intelligence, then this new superintelligence could become extremely powerful - possibly beyond our control.

Story
In What We Owe The Future, philosopher William MacAskill argues for longtermism, that idea that positively influencing the distant future is a key moral priority of our time. It’s not enough to reverse climate change or avert the next pandemic. We must ensure that civilization would rebound if it collapsed, counter the end of moral progress, and prepare for a planet where the smartest beings are digital, not human. If we set humanity’s course right, our grandchildren’s grandchildren will thrive, knowing we did everything to give them a world of justice, hope, and beauty.

Yet by every measure of human well-being, from life expectancy to clean water to climate safety, life has been getting better and better. How can this be? The explanation is that we usually hear only one side of the story. We're taught to think only of the negatives of fossil fuels, their risks and side effects, but not their positives.

Story
Deniers of climate change sometimes quip that claims about global warming are more about political science than climate science. They are wrong on the science, but may be right with respect to its political implications. A hotter world, writes Andrew Guzman, will bring unprecedented migrations, famine, war, and disease. It will be a social and political disaster of the first order.

Story
In The Vanishing Face of Gaia, British scientist James Lovelock predicts global warming will lead to a Hot Epoch. Lovelock is best known for formulating the controversial Gaia theory in the 1970s, with Ruth Margulis of the University of Massachusetts, which states that organisms interact with and regulate Earth's surface and atmosphere. We ignore this interaction at our peril.

Story
Age of Discovery explores a world on the brink of a new Renaissance and asks: how do we share more widely the benefits of unprecedented progress? How do we endure the inevitable tumult generated by accelerating change? How do we each thrive through this tangled, uncertain time? From gains in health, education, wealth and technology to crises of conflict, disease and mass migration, the similarities between today's world and that of the 15th century are both striking and prophetic: we have been here before.

And he led a successful effort by climate scientists and activists to keep nuclear plants operating, preventing a spike of emissions. But in 2019, as some claimed "billions of people are going to die", contributing to rising anxiety, including among adolescents, Shellenberger decided that he needed to speak out to separate science from fiction.

Smart take on how we can react positively against Climate Change and for the environment
I was very impressed with his take on how we can move forward in this disruptive period and come out in the end in a brighter abundant future. We must stop using fossil fuels and focus on the things we know will solve Climate Change. Not focusing on such things as Hydrogen

is optimism is up at the top
he may be right about some of the things that he says, but other than being overly optimistic, I don't think that this adds and very much to the climate debate. this is not long on hubris but is short on facts. some of the facts are inaccurate.
