About this listen

This program is read by the author.

"Read by the author, a talented and animated fantasy narrator who also voiced Legends, the book presents a colorful cast of new and familiar characters that is sure to ensorcell and delight listeners." —Booklist

When an injury throws a young, battle-hungry orc off her chosen path, she may find that what we need isn't always what we seek.

Set in the world of New York Times bestselling Legends & Lattes, Travis Baldree's Bookshops & Bonedust takes us on a journey of high fantasy, first loves, and second-hand books.

Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going as planned.

Wounded during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, she's packed off against her will to recuperate in the sleepy beach town of Murk—so far from the action that she worries she'll never be able to return to it.

What's a thwarted soldier of fortune to do?

Spending her hours at a beleaguered bookshop in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor is the last thing Viv would have predicted, but it may be both exactly what she needs and the seed of changes she couldn't possibly imagine.

Still, adventure isn't all that far away. A suspicious traveler in gray, a gnome with a chip on her shoulder, a summer fling, and an improbable number of skeletons prove Murk to be more eventful than Viv could have ever expected.

“Take a break from epic battles and saving the world. This is a low-stakes fantasy that delivers exactly what's advertised: a wholesome, cozy novel that feels like a warm hug. This is my new comfort read.”—Genevieve Gornichec, author of The Witch's Heart, on Legends & Lattes

Editorial Review

A (low-key) adventurous origin story
Narrator-cum-Hugo-nominated-author Travis Baldree produced magic in 2022 with his debut novel, Legends & Lattes, and listeners wondered: Could he conjure it again? (Spoiler: The answer is a resounding yes). In this latest adventure, we get a glimpse into Viv's backstory and the colorful characters she meets, befriends, and loves during a pivotal period in her adventuring life. Baldree performs his charming characters with such heart and precision, it makes a listener jealous we can't conjure their voices at any moment, like he can. We'll just have to re-listen and wait for more from this multi-talented voice. —Sam D., Audible Editor

good story all in all

Travis is one of my most favorite narrators and I've nearly boughten every book they have narrated. Now this being one that they have written I'm sure it's a little bit more close to the heart. it is a very cozy and warm book but unfortunately did not hit me as hard as the coffee shop. I really prefer the other book's pacing and story. I enjoyed many many parts of this book but the overarching story I thought was pretty generic but still better than a lot of them out there so it's still a win in my book just didn't hit those same feels that the first book did.

Travis did an amazing job again!

Travis Baldree is a superb narrator. He is able to make me forget that one person does all the voices.
I enjoyed the story as well. it did have similarities to the first book, but as a prequel, it could be one of the things to of influenced Viv's decision to open a shop in the first book. So, the similarities are fine. Thanks for another enjoyable journey Travis!

Simply amazing

I knew I would not be disappointed and of course I was not. Legends and lattes was so touching and beautiful . And this story gave us a glimpse into Viv‘s life before. New friends, or rather old, friends and plenty of adventure along the way. The human elements that he intertwines into these books, never ceases to touch my heart. Thank you, Travis, for once, again, delivering a very worthy read/listen.

Heartwarming

I love this series. Viv and the people she meets in her travels are beautiful characters. It’s a wonderful cute slice of life story and I can’t wait to hear more. The author is an amazing story teller and I love listening to him narrate his stories. I can’t wait for the next one.

Amazing!!!

I usually don’t really enjoy a prequel… but damn! This is such a fun, loving, cozy story that really gives a great view of both the world and the characters. Is it too much to ask for a third book already!

super cozy

Great characters. I wanted to curl up inside this story and live there. The Audio read was very pleasing and relaxing, voices for the characters well done. What a relaxing escape.

Fantastic

Such a lovely addition to legends and lattes. Hits all the nostalgic notes without pandering, has a feel consistent with the first book, and still stands on its own as a great story in its own right. Definitely going to re-listen; I miss these characters already!

A really fun listen

This was a good, fun story. It had some anachronistic elements, such as romance novels, that you ordinarily don't see in sword and sorcery type stories, but it added to the story, it didn't detract.
Viv was an excellent character. So was Fern. And I loved the owl dog.
My only real criticism is that it pushes a bit too hard to be a female only story, with almost no development of male characters, who remain flat and one dimensional throughout. I'm quite weary of this trope.
