Critic reviews

"When an edgy, rebellious teenage girl asks her to look for her missing mother, Irene crosses the path of a very dangerous serial killer - Nicholas Parrish. He is one of those totally anonymous but enormously gifted and resourceful villains found only in fiction. Parrish kills women who happen to look like Irene (and his abusive mother), and attracts devoted disciples to his grisly cause. Because of Irene's involvement, several more lives are damaged or endangered, and the strain takes its toll on the reporter's mental stability.Burke is such a fine, realistic writer that she can tread her way carefully across territory already well covered by Patricia Cornwell, Jeffery Deaver, Thomas Harris, et al. and still find something new to say about ritual murder and forensic science. But her real talent is bringing to full, instant life a remarkable woman - and the city she lives and works in." (Amazon.com review)
"A journey into the heart of darkness ... dark and gripping." ( Los Angeles Times)

Outstanding, riveting, and complete

Every aspect of this mystery was outstanding. The story was compelling, the development of Irene, the bringing in of so many interesting characters, the resolution of it, were all beyond what I would ever have expected when I was reading Book 1. What a commendable progression, tightening of story and attention to detail. I recommend this to any mystery addict, particularly if you want to identify with the main characters.

Excellent, a very pleasant surprise

I put off buying this book because of the Publishers Comments and the section on "What the Critics Say" They certainly didn't do it justice. I haven't read any other of the books in this series but really enjoyed this one. It wasn't too much of any one thing, nor did it lack substance. The plot flowed very nicely and was very believable from start to finish. Not only that, it was well researched and kept you guessing. I highly recommend it!

Poor

Written for 12 year olds, narrated for 3rd graders. Thinking about taking the $25 loss was more interesting than finishing the book

Not a Mystery or Thriller

You know from the start who the killer is and you find out halfway through who the accomplice is too. There is no “big reveal.” This is a boring story that goes on and on in meaningless detail. If you like mystery’s or thrillers I do not recommend.

The narrators voice is sappy sweet through the whole thing which makes it a little disconnected to the story she is narrating.
