Mack Story
About this listen
Finally, there is a book specifically created for the often overlooked and underdeveloped blue-collar workers on the front lines.
My passion is to help leaders and organizations invest in those on the front lines or to help you invest in yourself.
For the blue-collar workers I value so much: I've written the book I wish someone would have given me this book nearly 30 years ago when I started my career on the front lines. It would have changed my life then. It can change your life now.
Separate yourself from the crowd quickly by learning how to master the traits high-impact leaders value most. You will learn how to get noticed by the right people and how to get promoted for the right reasons. You will learn how to become recognized as a front-line leader worth following, and you don't need formal authority (position) because you will develop something better: moral authority (influence).
I've written this book specifically for the often overlooked great people with so much untapped potential on the front lines. If you're on the front lines it will help you better understand:
- How to make an impact from where you are
- How to be recognized for your abilities
- How to position yourself well for promotions
- How to increase your influence with your leaders and your teammates
- How to be a better team player
- How and why you should accept more responsibility
- How to intentionally become more valuable to the company
- How to become more valuable and successful as an individual
- How to lead yourself well in order to create a better future for yourself

True leadership isn't a matter of having a certain job or title. In fact, being chosen for a position is only the first of the five levels every effective leader achieves. To grow further in your role, you must achieve results and build a team that produces. You need to help people to develop their skills to become leaders in their own right.

Story
Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In our daily lives, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We listen to opinions that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos, rather than an opportunity to learn.

Awesome for Any Profession
The quality of advice given in this book cannot be measured in value. No matter what profession you work in or the color of your collar, you will find a TON of ideas that can be applied to what you do. My goal in listening to it was to help build a stronger Leadership program for our new and up-and-coming stars in the skilled trades but I see the ideas adopted from this book eventually being integrated into all of our curriculum. Thank you for such amazing advice! My absolute favorite quote from the book is "The most valuable player on the team is the person who can build the most players with value. " It doesn't get much clearer than that! Being a leader is, by no means, easy but this quote really sets the framework for the training program that I wish to build for our employees.

Leadership dumbed down to soundbytes
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Perhaps one just starting out in their work life might enjoy this book more than I did.
What was most disappointing about Mack Story’s story?
While the core values are on target the telling felt too elementary and the examples are basic. I will feel a bit embarrassed to assign this book to the team.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
This was an assigned reading because the greater organization in which I work, has adopted the book as a text in a development program. Even though I geek leadership studies, I am puzzled this book was adopted by the organization as a good idea. I haven't yet gotten into the work-books or facilitator tools but know that I am less than enthusiastic for the tool.
Any additional comments?
I believe there is no new content in this book - and the content that is there has been reduced to shorts much like a readers digest mag.

Not exceptional
I don’t know what I was expecting. The writer quotes a lot of other people and it is not very original. I was hoping for something more tangible I guess. Everything he said is true but I have already read all the books that he quotes so it was nothing new.
