About this listen

A young woman struggling with her Shadow. A bloodthirsty demon fighting for control. Neither prepared to lose against the other.

The country of Midoka embraces magic, also known as the gift. Its most powerful order of sorcerers, the Mist Women, teach novices at the coven in Maishi Hou, and their graduates serve as expert advisors all over the world. Magic is every Midokan’s undeniable birthright.

Except for Yua. An unwilling resident at the Maishi Hou coven, she can’t call forth the smallest flame.

Her only childhood memory is soaked in blood. The only hint as to who—or what—she is lies in her blackened veins.

But they also hide a shadow thirsting for blood, and even the leading Mist Woman fears it.

All her life, Yua has fought her Shadow…until she meets Aza, who says there’s no darkness without light.

Yua is done being scared of herself, but embracing her Shadow could kill everyone. If she tries, she could lose herself forever….

Or she could answer its whispers and become something new.

Gripping Dark Fantasy

This was the first book in the "Blood Wisp" series, and it was enthralling. The worldbuilding was complex. The setting was descriptive. The story introduced Yua and Aza; two very complicated characters. The author's description of Yua's struggles with her Shadow was so intricate that the reader couldn't help but be swept up into an emotional response. I liked the magical elements created in this tale. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Adriene Arce's narration was great, and her performance enhanced the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Yua and Aza are great new characters

This book is a dark-ish paranormal series starter that takes place in a world established in another series, but can be read as standalone.

I read a lot, and love to cheer for the main characters, but there are very few I wanted to succeed more than Yua. I connected with her immediately, and admired her strength and determination in the face of all the negativity she lives with. When readers meet her, she's led a lonely life full of discrimination and being misunderstood as well as judged and found guilty even though she's committed no crime.

The story is full of creative, thorough world building and character development. Watching Yua grow into herself was satisfying, and I adored Aza's character. Everyone should have a friend like her. I'm glad there are more books in the series — I definitely want to see what else these two can do together.

The vivid descriptions bring setting and emotions to life. There's some mystery, action, romance, drama, magic, along with a new take on vampires and witches. Those Mist Women! Bah!

Adrienne Arce narrated the story. She did an excellent job of channeling Yua, and I enjoyed listening to her performance of the narrative.

Great Story, but didn't care for the audio

I was first introduced to this story via the audiobook by downloading it on StoryOrigin for review. I will say that I could not get through the audiobook, though I tried several times. The narrator seems to be putting on an English accent but doesn't do so very convincingly, which leads to some awkward passages, especially when the inner dialogue is read.

Once I downloaded the ebook instead of the audio, I actually really enjoyed the story. Yau has been lied to for most of her life, and her relationships with others are almost non-existent because of the lies she's been told and the rumors about a massacre from which she was the only survivor. Yau has no memory of this, and the only clues to her past are her black veins, which seem to seep with evil. This all changes when she meets Aza, a sand blade warrior who has blood on her own hands. For the first time in Yau's life, she finally has a friend she can trust. With Aza's help, Yau takes control of her shadow and discovers her vampiric nature and also a bit about love and passion.

Sarina Langer's world-building and prose were well-developed and left me wanting more! I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series!

2 star listen

I don’t know what it was with this that didn’t hit the mark for me.
I listened via audio and I think it may have been how the audio was done as well as a little of the story/plot.

I don’t think I’ll continue the series, the storyline is ya and I am just not invested enough in any character at this stage.
