What if the church became more than a home for the hypocrites? What if the church became a hospital to heal the hurting?
When the carnage of war broke out on D-Day, the wounded were brought to an empty nearby church and laid on the pews so medics could treat them. When the war was over, and the blood-stained pews discovered, the townspeople decided to preserve the stains to remind all who would come afterward: This is the place where the wounded are welcome.
Blood Stained Pews is a chance to examine Jesus’ original intent for the church, a hospital for the broken. Pastor and author Carl Kuhl is clear: Christians have been getting this wrong, but in this book, he gives clear steps to change our hearts, our practices, and ultimately our churches through the power of open brokenness.
Through personal stories and powerful insights, Carl implores us to more deeply consider God’s grace and turn our churches into the places people run to when they’re wounded.

This book just solidifies why we are apart of the Mosaic family. I’ve never felt more broken in my life then the day I discovered my husband was having an affair. To know that we could come to church completely shattered and never once felt judged or like we didn’t belong.
To anyone who’s bleeding, please read this book and know that there will always be a place for you and all of your brokenness.

Carl does an excellent job explaining who Jesus died for and wants a relationship with. We are meant for community and us Christians have a responsibility to our fellow humans to live out the mission of the gospel.
He talks through the challenges we as Christians often think church should be, and then points back to what the Bible says the church is actually supposed to look like. Who the church is for… All of us, most definitely the outcasts.
Carl’s vulnerability in this book is something rare, especially from a pastor of a mega church. Carl is the pastor at my church and on a regular basis, he preaches truth and connects it back with his own failures and sin. He’s real, honest and humble about his own failures and his need for Jesus. That kind of vulnerability is what makes this book and his ministry so valuable to me.
Until we get honest with ourselves and stop judging those around us and making church all about the pretty, popular and clean, we will never reach the people who Jesus came and died for the most.
This book spells it out clearly and motivates change in how we should approach spreading the gospel to the hurting and broken. Thank you, Carl for your vulnerability and honesty. For your inclusion and insight. I’m glad God put you in my path. Keeping point us towards Jesus… we hear you and we’re with you!
