About this listen
Haunted by ghosts of the past, she was sailing directly into the eye of a storm. But fighting the challenges at sea was nothing compared with her complex personal struggles on an intense journey to find self-valuation.
Determined to complete the life-changing odyssey, in book two of her Living Life Sideways series, Michelle Segrest’s focus turns to an extraordinary effort to salvage her crumbling relationship with a masterfully manipulative skipper. She must find a way to navigate a confusing and chaotic battle between her own loyalty and the extreme betrayal she suffers at the hands of a dangerous narcissist.
She is torn between the exciting escape from the ordinary, the fascinating cultures and experiences of exotic destinations, the thrill of the voyage, and the toxic relationship that continues to unravel. Her only source of comfort is her two devoted beagles, Cap’n Jack and Scout. A dramatic, three-week Atlantic crossing will test the skill and resolve of the novice sailor as she is forced to make a decision about whether the consequences of moving forward are worth it.
In this powerful account of a woman’s attempt to overcome enormous obstacles, Segrest charts an epic journey combining an individual’s survival story with a fascinating sailing journal. And by sharing her deepest anxieties and raw experience of life on deck, you’ll witness how one sailor’s increasing nightmare turns into a soul-searching quest for meaning.
Blinded by Love & Loyalty is the turbulent second book in the three-part Living Life Sideways travel memoir series. If you like intensely personal narratives, oceangoing challenges, and brutally honest self-assessments, then you’ll love Michelle Segrest’s emotional storm.

What they don't see from their resort hotels are the hundreds of out-of-the-way, uninhabited islands sprinkled along the West Indies, from Florida to South America. This alluring archipelago, strung with beaches accessible only by boat but spaced temptingly close together, led Mississippi adventurer Scott B. Williams to embark upon an open-ended quest to see how far south he could go in a 17-foot sea kayak.

Tania Aebi was an unambitious 18-year-old, a bicycle messenger in New York City by day, a Lower East Side barfly at night. In short, she was going nowhere - until her father offered her a challenge: Tania could choose either a college education or a 26-foot sloop. The only catch was that if she chose the sailboat, she'd have to sail around the world - alone. She chose the boat, and for the next two and a half years and 27,000 miles, it was her home.

At middle age, Herb and Nancy Payson decided they needed a change. Why not give up life on shore, quit their jobs in the smoky nightclubs of Los Angeles, and take up the cruising life? In Sea Foam, their 36-foot ketch, the Paysons and their large brood of teenage children cruised the Pacific for six and a half years. They experienced a certain amount of stark terror, but their delights far outbalanced the drawbacks. This special 35th anniversary edition is enhanced with a foreword by Lin Pardey, plus Herb's reflections on how cruising affected his children and his relationship with his determined, lifelong partner/wife Nancy.

Story
Finding and identifying a pirate ship is the hardest thing to do under the sea. But two men—John Chatterton and John Mattera—are willing to risk everything to find the Golden Fleece, the ship of the infamous pirate Joseph Bannister. At large during the Golden Age of Piracy in the seventeenth century, Bannister should have been immortalized in the lore of the sea—his exploits more notorious than Blackbeard’s, more daring than Kidd’s. But his story, and his ship, have been lost to time.

Story
When Miss Norma was diagnosed with uterine cancer, she was advised to undergo surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. But instead of confining herself to a hospital bed for what could be her last stay, Norma - newly widowed after nearly seven decades of marriage - rose to her full height of five feet and told her doctor, "I'm 90 years old. I'm hitting the road." Packing what she needed, Norma took off on an unforgettable cross-country journey with three professional nomads - her retired son, Tim; his wife, Ramie; and their standard poodle, Ringo.

Story
Early in 2013 Neil Hayward was at a crossroads. He didn't want to open a bakery or whatever else executives do when they quit a lucrative but unfulfilling job. He didn't want to think about his failed relationship with 'the one' or his potential for ruining a new relationship with 'the next one'. And he almost certainly didn't want to think about turning 40. And so instead he went birding. Birding was a lifelong passion. It was only among the birds that Neil found a calm that had eluded him in the confusing world of humans.

Story
After 17 years at sea, Linda Greenlaw figured it was time to take a break from her career as a swordboat captain. She felt she needed to return to Isle au Haut - a tiny island seven miles from the Maine coast with a population of 70 year-round residents, 30 of whom were her relatives. She would pursue a simpler life; move back in with her parents and get to know them again; become a professional lobsterman; and find a guy, build a house, have kids, and settle down. But all doesn't go as planned.

Story
In his number-one best seller The Perfect Storm, Sebastian Junger describes Linda Greenlaw as "one of the best sea captains, period, on the East Coast." Now Greenlaw tells her own riveting story of a 30 day swordfishing voyage aboard one of the best-outfitted boats on the East Coast, complete with danger, humor, and characters so colorful they seem to have been ripped from the pages of Moby Dick. The excitement starts immediately, even before Greenlaw and her five-man crew leave the dock.

Story
John Marshall had read about the growth of voluntourism, and frankly, it was the only kind of extended trip he could afford. He'd heard that some peoples' lives were changed by a week of overseas service - what might half a year accomplish for his family? His wife, Traca, was all in favor of it; his kids, especially his 14-year-old daughter, were strongly opposed. Wide-Open World is the totally engaging, bluntly honest story of the Marshall family's life-changing adventure.

Story
Life is a work in progress, as ever-changing as a sandy shoreline along the beach. During the years Joan Anderson was a loving wife and supportive mother, she had slowly and unconsciously replaced her own dreams with the needs of her family. With her sons grown, however, she realized that the family no longer centered on the home she provided, and her relationship with her husband had become stagnant. Like many women in her situation, Joan realized that she had neglected to nurture herself and, worse, to envision fulfilling goals for her future.

Drawn to a sailing adventure then Michelle Segrest set a hook
I’ve recently gotten to dip my toe into the adventure of sailing and this series seemed to speak my language, or at least a language I wanted to speak. Now I can’t wait to continue the series but I’m not sure what part of the story has my interest more? Surviving Neptune? Dealing with a relationship? Just being a fan of this sailor. I keep looking at a pictures of this beautiful woman and scratch my head, thinking “how” and “why”.
