About this listen
There's no place like home....
Kim and Julian Taylor are in the market for their first home, and a visit to the secluded Beacon estate finds them enamored. It's a peculiar home, rather large and in need of some renovations. The price is right, however, and after a tour, they snap the house up without hesitation.
The man who sells them the house has one last detail to share before they sign on the dotted line. The previous owners of the home disappeared under mysterious circumstances nearly eight years ago and have recently been declared dead in absentia. Unperturbed by this fact, Kim and Julian set about making the home their own.
It quickly becomes clear that the two of them are not alone there, however.
This volume contains all four installments of the serialized novel Black Acres: In Absentia, The Borderland, The Amber Light, and In Darkness. It also contains a brief preface by the author.

It was only supposed to be a game. In a boring suburb, three lonely men seeking distractions from their monotonous routines get together in an abandoned house to play a macabre game of show-and-tell. Nothing is off-limits in their little circle - anything, no matter how depraved, is welcome...so long as it's frightening. A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits. Featuring more than 160 all-new illustrations by Gary Gianni, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a must-have collection that proves chivalry isn’t dead—yet.

Different kind of creepy
I am a pretty big fan of Ambrose Ibsen and of haunted house stories so anytime I see one offered I will usually snatch it up. Over the years I have found that a narrator can either destroy a story or really bring it to life. Joe Hempel is the perfect narrator for Mr Ibsen's books. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my review so here we go.
The Taylors are looking for a house that will get them out of the city. Whenever my husband and I have looked at houses we had certain things that we were looking for. Certain things that will make this house a dream home for awhile. However, a house that is located far away from the nearest neighbor or place to buy groceries, with little or no phone reception and a super creepy dead tree forest behind it is not my idea of a good place to maybe someday start a family. Did I mention that the previous owners just flat out disappeared? They buy it anyway and begin the renovations. Kim is the first one to notice that things are not right with the house and her concerns are largely disregarded by Julian (strike one). She hears strange noises and they find strange pictures in the house and Julian again has an explanation for this weirdness. She finds a hidden room and again Julian is not too impressed or worried about it (strike two). When Kim sees an a ghost for crying out loud her husband tells her she's imagining it. (strike three Julian and you're out). It's not until Julian begins to experience things that he thinks "hmmmm, maybe Kim is right"
I will be listening to this book again and I know I will enjoy it again. And as I always do when I re-listen I will find answers to some of my own unasked questions. Thanks Mr Ibsen and Mr Hempel for another good book.

Do Not Read In the Dark
These books are very artfully done. This is the complete collection of Black Acres, a four-book series. The narration started at the beginning and there was never a break or interruption between the original books. This was wonderful as you were not suddenly pulled from the creepy, mysterious world out to “And Now Book Two.” This set allows you to stay immersed for the entire series. I was unable to tell where one book ended and the next began.
I was hooked from the beginning. At first, I thought it would more of a creepy joke; creaky stairs, weird noises, things that go bump in the night, but I was wrong, so wrong. Even when you might think you know what is going to happen it twists and changes.
This is a great series and I look forward to reading more of Mr. Isben's novels.
I was provided with a free copy of this audio book for my honest review. The views expressed here are entirely my own.

Not for me..
I chose this book on all the positive reviews, it was not as expected. The narration was mediocre I could not tell if the characters name was JULien or JOlien! It was pronounced differently throughout the story. I thought the writing was just okay and the story did not seem finished to me. I was surprised it got so many rave reviews.

Not new, but not run of the mill
This one failed to grab me. It started out really slow. I mean really, really slow. While it does add to the suspense, there were several parts in the story that I was just hoping the author would get to the point. What started out as a ghost/haunted house story ended up more in the Lovecraftian vein, which tends to become trite. The narration was good, no real complaints there. I think this story would be better off read than listened to. That way, you put your own visuals to it, which could make it scarier. I received this review copy via Audiobook Boom, and have voluntarily left a review.

Goose bump bonanza!
In Black Acres, we are gifted with a well-written haunted house tale. I was happy to acquire the omnibus version including all four volumes of the novel. I’ve read several excellent stories by Ibsen, both long and short, having enjoyed each one. This tale involves a young couple, Kim and Julian Taylor as they purchase their first fixer-upper. The only quirk in the sales process was that the previous owners had suddenly disappeared eight years ago, having just recently been declared dead in absentia. This fact did not overshadow Julian’s enthusiasm with the fifty-year-old home. As the story unfolds it becomes clear that the Taylor’s are not alone. The house appears to have an agenda of its own, influencing the happy couple via dreams, apparitions, and unexplained noises from the woods beyond. Our couple investigates, discovering more than they bargained for while raising their fear and stress to dangerous levels. What is the goal our homeowners are pushed to? What became of the previous owners? What will become of Kim and Julian? This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.

Creepy !
I listen at work, and each day I couldn't wait to get back to the story. I even listened at home a few times on my days off because I couldn't wait to see what happened next !

Great Read
Great first attempt, Ambrose! It was a page turner! However, I was left with way too many unanswered questions, and there were many loose ends that needed to be tightened up. Hate to list them here lest I spoil the story for someone else, but the ending was a bit disappointing. There was even a section towards the end where you repeated subject matter you had just covered. The majority of the book was a thrill ride, but the wrap up and ending didn’t measure up to the rest of the story.

Loved!
I received a free copy of this audiobook for an honest review.
I loved this story!!! This was a hard one to put down. It was an entertaining, sitting-on-the-edge-of-my-seat, wish-it-were-longer type of story. His scene descriptions, especially of the house, were on par. It was so easy to imagine or see what these characters were seeing and experiencing. I'm not sure how I felt about the ending, although I'm not really sure what I expected. I don't know how anyone thought this was a boring story. I've read plenty of books that were boring. For me, that equates to fast forwarding till something interesting happened. That was no the case here. This story held my attention 24/7. I would love to read more by this author.
The narrator did a great job, his voice definitely added to the story as well. The only thing that stood out in a negative way was when he said "She sounded frail..." in reality, he said, "She frounded frail." I don't know if that was how it was written in the story, but I went back several times just to confirm I wasn't hearing it wrong and I wasn't.
Questions/Comments:
What was with the main characters going to bed (twice) after being sweaty, as in there was mentioned of them taking off their sweaty clothes (ie they're dirty) before getting into bed? Yuck!

Started out good.
I am giving this book a three star rating instead of a one star because I thought the narrator was excellent.
I do not care for books that leave happenings unexplained and lots of loose ends in the story. Where did Dakota's "baby" come from? Why was the baby brought to Dakota by a " mangey, dying wolf"? What causes the amber light in the woods to summon the creature? What was the meaning of the masked figures in the old photograph? Who was the masked person in the woods the first night?
The book started out to be very good, the concept was interesting and the author did a good job of building suspense in the first several chapters. Unfortunately, the main characters quickly become annoying, their attitudes toward each other is irksome, and their reactions to the happenings in their house is ridiculous to the point that it makes them, especially Julian, seem less than intelligent.
The narrator did an outstanding job.

It will keep your attention. Lots of horror! Would recommend. Didn’t expect the ending. Author tells a detailed story.
