About this listen

This box set includes two mystery novels written by Edgar and Shamus Award finalist Ben Rehder. Included are Buck Fever (first novel in the Blanco County mystery series) and Gone the Next (first novel in the Roy Ballard mystery series).

Buck Fever:

It's the week before deer hunting season, as close to a statewide holiday as you get in Texas, and the locals are getting restless. Game Warden John Marlin has his hands full with poaching complaints coming in faster than he can write out-of-season tickets. Then a call of a different sort comes in. A man dressed up in some sort of deer costume has been shot at the Circle S ranch, and witnesses are reporting a massive wild-eyed buck prancing about the pasture in a lovesick frenzy. Marlin's seen a lot in his years, but this is wilder than he could have imagined: The man in the deer suit is a good friend, and the whacked-out whitetail isn't exactly a stranger either. It's the beginning of a mad, frantic weekend in Blanco County, one that will see a few more men shot, an invasion by Colombians with more than hunting on their minds, and damn near the end of Marlin's life. Ben Rehder serves it all up with a huge helping of humor in this debut comic mystery that will firmly establish him as the funniest crime writer in Texas.

Gone the Next:

Meet Roy Ballard, freelance videographer with a knack for catching insurance cheats. He's working a routine case, complete with hours of tedious surveillance, when he sees something that shakes him to the core. There, with the subject, is a little blond girl wearing a pink top and denim shorts - the same outfit worn by Tracy Turner, a six-year-old abducted the day before. When the police are skeptical of Ballard's report - and with his history, who can blame them? - it's the beginning of the most important case of his life.

Awesome funny seriously

I listened to this book over 3 days and laughed and cried all the way through both books.
The first story true good ole redneck boys that kept me laughing all the way through.
Gone the next I thought was going to be a tear jerker and it didn’t disappoint but it also had laughs throughout. Both books were above my expectations but I am so glad that I had the opportunity to enjoy them.
I received this free from the author or narrator for an honest review.

Gripping stories, fantastic narration

This set contains two full length mystery/whodunit stories, Buck Fever and Gone The Next. Both were very enjoyable and well written; my favorite is gone the next, the nailbiting chase to find and rescue an abducted girl.

I really enjoyed the narration, too - Johnny Peppers did an awesome job!

2 Great Stories

I received this boxset of two awesome stories in the authors promotion. I had read the Kindle version of Gone The Next a few years ago. So I had read along while listening and the audio was a nice rendition of the book. The narration by Johnny Peppers made the story come to life, also Buck Fever was a fun listen, I would recommend these two stories.

Excellent for pleasure listening.

Fantastic performance, interesting story, I enjoyed listening to this box set, a magnificent crime mystery. Ben Rehder injects lots of humor into his writings. Love both books. Johnny Peppers is truly an excellent reader, bringing life into the story. For audio books, both writer and reader have to be equally great for a pleasurable listening.

great listen

The first one was hilarious and I enjoyed the shenanigans and banter. The second one is more serious but has some light moments. I enjoyed them both very much. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a great job bringing it to life. I highly recommend this series and author.

Buck Fever-- John Marlin-- Game Warden

This is one of the best books I've found in a while. John Marlin is a game warden and deer season is coming up. But that's the least of his worries. There is drug running going on and Marlin is on to them. There is the right amount of humor in this book to make it good. There is a bunch of good ole country boys. This is the first book in the series. I will definitely continue with this series. I highly recommend trying this. You also get the first book in the Roy Ballard series. So you get to try two different series for one credit or the price of one book. Johnny Peppers does a great job narrating this book. Funny and Intense

Buck Fever is a nicely written book that is full of humor, suspense, drama, and romance. Game Warden John Marlin has seen it all, or so he believed until that fateful weekend. The storyline is built around a very serious subject, yet it is full of humor and redneck mentalities and one-liners. Johnny Pepper did a phenomenal job bringing the story to life with his voices and accents. I will admit that one part I didn't like was the racial slurs against Hispanic people, but other than that, I liked the book. I would definitely recommend this book.

Gone the Next definitely did not disappoint it was well written, well developed, and intense thriller. The story was believable and very factual. The storyline was intense, but I loved how the author used sarcastic wit to break the tension. The author does a phenomenal job in bringing every parents worst nightmare to life of having their child go missing.

While on a case, the main character Roy Ballard, a freelancing videographer, spots a little girl who looks like a missing 6 year old Tracy Turner with the subject of his investigation. Roy does the right thing and reports it to the police but they don't believe him because of his past mistakes. Roy, with the help of Mia, will stop at nothing to find out the truth and rescue Tracy. The story is intense and does not always go as planned, but it is intriguing and kept me guessing and glued to my phone. I could not stop listening. I became too invested in the story and characters. I had to know what happened to little Tracy Turner and did they get her home safe and sound. I received this double book free upon request. I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased review here of my own volition. These books are a must-read/listen.
