About this listen

A Warhammer Horror novel

On the mean streets of Altdorf, Guard Captain 'Filthy Harald' Kleindeist investigates a series of gruesome murders that take him into the upper echelons of Imperial society and expose horrors beyond imagining.

Listen to it because

It's a classic Warhammer murder mystery that delves into the darkness behind the Imperial aristocracy as well as the horrors to be found in the poorest districts of Altdorf.

The story

In the Imperial capital of Altdorf, a killer stalks the streets. Nicknamed 'The Beast' by those who have seen the remains of his victims, all evidence points to the haughty members of the Imperial court, the wealthy and privileged who are a law unto themselves.

Written by Kim Newman. Narrated by Antonia Beamish.

Fun book easy to listen along

I liked this one a lot. Didn’t listen to it with all my attention but it was really atmospheric and I could follow along easy enough. Not sure someone would be able to even write this story with everything being under the political magnifier these days.

WH Old World fun

A fun expansion to the Geniveve set of stories. This one focuses on more side characters and would probably be better listened to before some stories in Silver Nails (there are chronological reading lists online you can find), but having listened to it afterwards, there is nothing fully lost by doing so. Detailing the hunt for "The Beast" by Filthy Harold and Baron Von Mecklenburg, you will only be left wishing there was more of these characters, but alas, these stories are decades old and no more will likely be forthcoming.

Good detective plot. No vampire plot.

intriguing warhammer detective story. no vamp plot. Think the production would benefit from bigger time gaps between paragraphs that switch narrative perspective: author likes to shift characters without warning and audibly its hard to tell sometimes if there was a switch until a few lines of txt later.

Worth the credit for it!

Absolutely has that odd ‘Old World’ sense of style from the first Genevieve novel, Drachenfels, and is shared with Gotrek and Felix. My only complaint is that the title is misleading in that it said it’s a Genevieve novel, and yet Genevieve herself is treated as merely a background character, with only a couple minor scenes between her and Detlef Sierch. I’m not saying that she had to be in every scene in the book, but it would’ve done just as well as a stand-alone title on its own merit without her making a guest appearance. Other than that, the book was awesome

Not what I was expecting, but not bad

So let me be clear, this is NOT a vampire Genevieve book. It's a very good Warhammer mystery/horror book but not in the Genevieve series. She is only in the book for a hand full of pages and had no impact on the story. Other than that I can say I did not see the series of resist at the finale and highly recommend.

Oh wow.

It was a fun Gothic horror/mystery murder story. Though I came here expecting another Genevieve story, instead I had gotten these unfamiliar characters. With Genevieve essentially having a small cameo. By the end I ended up liking the characters and the story

Outstanding!

A full-on political thriller and spine-tingling chiller, Ms. Newman keeps rocking every wing of the literary house.

Fun but a bit deceptive

This is a great book if you enjoy mysteries but if you're reading this for Genevieve you'll be disappointed. She doesn't spend much time in the story. But it's a good detective story trying to find out who done it.
