About this listen
He may be ready to go to hell...but he ain't ready to give up.
Van Delano is still determined to free his sister from the clutches of Nine-Fingered Nan, whatever it takes. So, when the outlaw queen suggests an exchange, he’s all too eager to agree.
Doesn’t matter the stagecoach he’s supposed to find is traveling a route that don’t make no sense toward the one town he never wanted to step foot into again.
Doesn’t matter the lockbox he’s supposed to steal off it just might be Old World tech.
Doesn’t matter he’s now got a bounty on his head so high every fortune-seeker in the Territories will be after him.
If he don’t get that lockbox for Nine-Fingered Nan, his sister gets sold overseas, and he gets handed over to Baron Whittaker’s infamous bastard son, who has a very personal axe to grind with the man who murdered his father.
For fans of The Coilhunter series, Make Me No Grave, and the Red Dead Redemption games, mount on up to continue this gritty, action-packed, heart-wrenching tale, and get the audiobook today!
Not for the faint of heart! This series contains adult themes, situations, and language. Additionally, each installment of this series will end on a soft cliff-hanger, with the final events of one book setting up the events of the next book. And lastly, the steampunk elements are a semi-slow build, appearing in a "lost civilization is rediscovered" kind of way.
"This guy can't catch a break! I'll be honest though, I can't help but be invested. It's fine work." (Roger Clark, Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption II)

A deal goes bad...and Van Delano is left to die in the desert. But most folk say he’s been cursed with a double-barreled shotgun of mulishness. So, when his first attempt at bargaining for his kidnapped sister’s freedom lands him with a dead horse, a bullet in his leg, and miles of desert between him and the nearest town, he’s not about to give up. He’ll fight and claw, cheat and steal, even kill, if he has to.

James Crowley met his mortal end in a hail of gunfire. Now, he finds himself in purgatory, serving the White Throne to avoid falling to hell. Not quite undead, though not alive either, the best he can hope for is to work off his servitude and fade away. His not-so-sacred duty as a Hand of God? Use his new abilities to hunt down demonic beings that have infiltrated the mortal realm. This time, the White Throne has sent him to the middle of nowhere: a Western town called Dead Acre with a saloon, a moldy church, and little else worth talking about. There isn’t even a sheriff.

Unwilling to accept failure, he granted each the authority to operate outside the law. His directive was simple. No rules. No excuses. Just get it done. Remy Kincaid, the son of a pugilist and sharpshooter, is recruited with the promise of discovering those responsible for his father’s abduction. With the help of his cynical steed, Fable, he heads to the town of Wharton, Texas, to investigate the disappearance of several young children.

Nevada, 1869: Beyond the pitiless 40-Mile Desert lies Golgotha, a cattle town that hides unnatural secrets. The sheriff bears the mark of the noose around his neck; some say he is a dead man whose time has not yet come. His half-human deputy is kin to coyotes. The mayor guards a hoard of mythical treasures. A banker's wife belongs to a secret order of assassins. And a shady saloon owner, whose fingers are in everyone's business, may know more about the town's true origins than he's letting on. Story
My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet. I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why? I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know.

So it is left to Dannen Ateran, known in his youth as the Bloody Butcher, but more recently as the passed-out drunk at the table in the corner, to lead his companions against an army of the dead.

A Harrowing Misadventure for a Desperate Antihero
This book is a better than the last one, in that the protagonist truly begins to progress in his journey of self-discovery/recovery. The action is energetic and colorful, as are all the characters. I enjoyed the dialogue and jargon. It feels like first book was all set-up. The story really begins here. The plot twists and turns, yielding surprise after surprise. The author is skilled in keeping your attention.
I like this series, so far, and am giving it five stars because it so far has me hooked. But a story is only as good as its ending. Hopefully, the next book or the one after will give us a bit more closure and resolution.

Excellent Story, Excellent Narrator
A thick introduction quickly builds up to a freight train of a story, and then it’s hard to put it down! Amazing sorry, and Roger’s narration adds to the richness of the setting and characters. Listening to him is always a treat, but especially for such a well-written story. Can’t wait to listen to the third book!

The thing I like most about the Main Character is how mindlessly he stays true to himself, even when it’s definitely to his own disadvantage. Reminds me of playing Fallout with a 1 in intelligence, first thought that pops in his head is the thought he goes with

No resolution or progression; static characters
I love Roger Clark as a narrator which is why I listened to this book but in terms of story of progression, this tale is really lacking. There’s basically zero character development and everyone is so one dimensional that there’s really no investment. The plot of the first book is exactly the same as the second—“go do a wild mission in order to get your sister back but then oh you’ve solved my mission! Now I’m upping the stakes and you still don’t have your sister !”
There’s really no nuance to anyone. There’s obviously evil people which we don’t have to feel bad about Van killing because they’re evil, and he doesn’t require too much introspection because he only has one plot point, which is to find his sister that an established untrustworthy character says she has without proof. All the murder that’s required between A and B are justified although so far, the ends do not justify the means. Secondary characters and Allies are introduced but never really developed beyond surface level.
I do love Roger Clark and he provides the only redeeming quality to this otherwise slog fest. However, I can’t really recommend this book.
