About this listen
This is a reissue of National Book Award finalist Mary Gaitskill's debut collection, Bad Behavior - powerful stories about dislocation, longing, and desire that depict a disenchanted and rebellious urban-fringe generation as it searches for human connection.
Now a classic, Bad Behavior made critical waves when it was first published, heralding Gaitskill's arrival on the literary scene and her establishment as a sharp, erotically charged, and audaciously funny writer of contemporary literature.
Stories included here are "Daisy's Valentine", "A Romantic Weekend", "Something Nice", "An Affair, Edited", "Connection", "Trying to Be", "Secretary", "Other Factors", and "Heaven".

Story
The effervescent, well-dressed Quin, a successful book editor and fixture on the New York arts scene, has been accused of repeated unforgivable transgressions toward women in his orbit. But are they unforgivable? And who has the right to forgive him? To Quin’s friend Margot, the wrongdoing is less clear. Alternating Quin’s and Margot’s voices and perspectives, Gaitskill creates a nuanced tragicomedy, one that reveals her characters as whole persons - hurtful and hurting, infuriating and touching, and always deeply recognizable.

Story
Julia Fox is famous for many things: her captivating acting, such as her breakout role in the film Uncut Gems; her trendsetting style, including bleached eyebrows, exaggerated eyeshadow, and cutout dresses; her mastery of social media, where she entertains and educates her millions of followers. But all these share the trait for which she is most famous: unabashedly and unapologetically being herself. This commitment to authenticity has never been more on display than in Down the Drain. With writing that is both eloquent and accessible, Fox recounts her turbulent path to cultural supremacy.

One of Marek’s few consolations is his enduring bond with the blind village midwife, Ina, who suckled him when he was a baby. Anais Nin wrote her diary at the end of 1931, at the close of a sexually tumultuous and emotional year as part of a ménage a trois with fellow writer Henry Miller and his beautiful wife June Mansfield. 'I really believe that if I were not a writer, not a creator, not an experimenter, I might have been a very faithful wife.' Nin's passionate and consuming relationship with Henry & June transformed a previously monogamous wife into an uninhibited and sexually liberated woman.

There's something eerily unsettling about Ottessa Moshfegh's stories, something almost dangerous, while also being delightful and even laugh-out-loud funny. Her characters are all unsteady on their feet in one way or another; they all yearn for connection and betterment, though each in very different ways, but they are often tripped up by their own baser impulses and existential insecurities.

Story
Reminiscing about the people and events that shaped him, David looks back at the highs and lows of his life, from his rejection of being gay and his attempt to "turn straight" through Aesthetic Realism, a cult in downtown Manhattan, to becoming a writer, cookbook author, and web publisher, to his 23-year relationship with Alan, known to millions of David's readers and listeners as "The One", which began with (what else?) food.

Story
Originally published in 1936, this is Anaïs Nin's first work of fiction. But unlike her diaries and erotica, House of Incest does not detail the author's relationships with her famous lovers, nor does it contain graphic depiction of sex. Rather, it is a surrealistic look within the narrator's subconscious mind as she attempts to escape from a dream in which she is trapped, or in Nin's words, as she attempts to escape from "the woman's season in hell." Nin's usage of the word "incest" in this case is metaphorical, not literal.

Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases - a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with as well as way less experience in the dating department than the average 30-year-old. It doesn't help that she has Asperger's and that French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. She decides that she needs lots of practice - with a professional - which is why she hires escort Michael Phan.

Narrator is very flat
The stories are odd (expected) but the narration is really tough to listen to. One tone, VERY flat and monotonous, weird ‘out of breath’ spots and strange lilts/pauses. There is also really no break between the stories so with no change at all in narrator, it feels like one story just streams into the next

Unexpected and Great!
I found out that the movie “Secretary “ was based on a short story contained within this book and that was the reason for my interest. I made the mistake of reading a few negative/lackluster reviews about the book and began it with a tainted attitude and some erroneous preconceived notions. I briefly started the book, felt that the reviews were justified, and set it aside in favor of other books and podcasts. I came back to the book several weeks later and started over. I am so glad that I did!
This is a book of short stories about complex, unconventional, unusual people dealing with complex, unconventional, and unusual situations and uncomfortable relationships. Sometimes I found myself laughing out loud. Other times, my mind wandered because of the thought provoking nature of the material. I thought the author did a great job reading the book and her tone and voices were perfectly suited for the characters. Wonderful! Highly recommended!

Author should not read her own story
Her narration is the worst I have ever experienced and I have listened to dozens of books on audible. Some authors need to let professional narrators do that job.
