Ayn Rand
About this listen
As passionate as it is profound, Atlas Shrugged is one of the most influential novels of our time. In it, Rand dramatizes the main tenets of objectivism, her philosophy of rational selfishness. She explores the ramifications of her radical thinking in a world that penalizes human intelligence and integrity.
Part mystery, part thriller, part philosphical inquiry, part volatile love affair, Atlas Shrugged is the book that confirmed Ayn Rand as one of the most popular novelists and most respected thinkers of the 20th century.

One of the 20th century's most challenging novels of ideas, The Fountainhead champions the cause of individualism through the story of a gifted young architect who defies the tyranny of conventional public opinion. Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

The foundations of capitalism are being battered by a flood of altruism, which is the cause of the modern world's collapse. This was the view of Ayn Rand, a view so radically opposed to prevailing attitudes that it constituted a major philosophic revolution. In this series of essays, she presented her stand on the persecution of big business, the causes of war, the default of conservatism, and the evils of altruism.

Story
Who needs philosophy? Ayn Rand's answer: Everyone. This collection of essays was the last work planned by Ayn Rand before her death in 1982. In it, she summarizes her view of philosophy and deals with a broad spectrum of topics. According to Ayn Rand, the choice we make is not whether to have a philosophy, but which one to have: a rational, conscious, and therefore practical one, or a contradictory, unidentified, and ultimately lethal one.

Story
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Harold Bloom explores our Western literary tradition by concentrating on the works of twenty-six authors central to the Canon. He argues against ideology in literary criticism; he laments the loss of intellectual and aesthetic standards; he deplores multiculturalism, Marxism, feminism, neoconservatism, Afrocentrism, and the New Historicism. Insisting instead upon "the autonomy of aesthetic," Bloom places Shakespeare at the center of the Western Canon.....

Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media: has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? The world renowned author of The Satanic Verses and The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Salman Rushdie is a Whitbread Award winner and recipient of the Booker Prize. His first truly American novel, Fury is a metaphorically rich black comedy that reflects the pressure-cooker of modern life. Malik Solanka, irascible doll-maker and retired historian of ideas, suffers the pain of wanting without knowing exactly what it is he wants.

Story
Sister Carrie is an epic of urban life, the story of an innocent heroine adrift in an indifferent city. When small-town girl Carrie Meeber sets out for Chicago, she is equipped with nothing but a few dollars, a certain unspoiled beauty and charm, and a pitiful lack of preparation for the complex moral choices she will face. Her story is one of struggle, from sweatshop to stage success, and of the love she inspires in a married man twice her age, whose obsession with her threatens to destroy him.

Moscow, Christmas Eve, 1949. The Soviet secret police intercept a call made to the American embassy by a Russian diplomat who promises to deliver secrets about the nascent Soviet Atomic Bomb program. On that same day, a brilliant mathematician is locked away inside a Moscow prison that houses the country's brightest minds. This is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world - and did. Is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he fight his hardest battle not against his enemies, but against the woman he loves? Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus and launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon.

One of the 20th century's most challenging novels of ideas, The Fountainhead champions the cause of individualism through the story of a gifted young architect who defies the tyranny of conventional public opinion.

They existed only to serve the state. They were conceived in controlled Palaces of Mating. They died in the Home of the Useless. From cradle to grave, the crowd was one - the great WE. In all that was left of humanity, there was only one man who dared to think, seek, and love. He lived in the dark ages of the future. In a loveless world, he dared to love the woman of his choice. In an age that had lost all trace of science and civilization, he had the courage to seek and find knowledge.

In the years between her first public lecture in 1961 and her last in 1981, Ayn Rand spoke and wrote about topics as different as education, medicine, Vietnam, and the death of Marilyn Monroe. In The Voice of Reason, these pieces are gathered together in book form for the first time. Written in the last decades of Rand's life, they reflect a life lived on principle, a probing mind, and a passionate intensity. With them are five essays by Leonard Peikoff, Rand's longtime associate and literary executor.

Who needs philosophy? Ayn Rand's answer: Everyone. This collection of essays was the last work planned by Ayn Rand before her death in 1982. In it, she summarizes her view of philosophy and deals with a broad spectrum of topics. According to Ayn Rand, the choice we make is not whether to have a philosophy, but which one to have: a rational, conscious, and therefore practical one, or a contradictory, unidentified, and ultimately lethal one.

better than expected
What did you love best about Atlas Shrugged?
Applies to the situation in our country today. It offers hope for a brighter future. It always motivates me to be my best despite obstacles.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Atlas Shrugged?
Dagney Taggert trading diamonds for a Rearden metal bracelet, completing the impossible John Gault line and then taking the train across the Rearden metal bridge. There were to many great moments to describe! She weaves a great story into her philosophical points. You will see echoes of what is happening here in the united states and Europe even though this was written 50 plus years ago.
What about Edward Herrmann’s performance did you like?
My biggest compliment was I never noticed him.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I stood up and cheered for John Gault
Any additional comments?

Excellent, but...
This book is wonderful and the performance is spot on. I will forever have those voices in my head for the characters in this book. I only give this book 4 stars because the abridged version leaves out to much. You're left wanting more - especially at the end of the book. I have a three hour a day commute during the work week and I finished this book on my Friday morning morning drive. Not all of the narrative is practical but the book is nevertheless fun and will get you thinking.

Most enjoyable way to go through atlas shrugged
I have since childhood held the desire of reading this book one day. However, the enormous length of this book, kept me from getting at it. Then it struck me to try audible and found this version. The reviews and sample audio clips looked promising. And the audio book lived upto it! Mr. Hermann wonderfully though his story telling brings all the characters to life and makes this story most enjoyable!

Amazing Story! Okay narration!
Where does Atlas Shrugged rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is one of my favorite all time stories! If you are into political intrigue and how the world will be in a hundred years then this is the book to read.
Have you listened to any of Edward Herrmann’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to this narrator before, but I did enjoy listening to him. He had a good presence and was not annoying like quite a few others. Have a heard better? Of course, but I would listen to his books again.

What made the experience of listening to Atlas Shrugged the most enjoyable?

What other book might you compare Atlas Shrugged to and why?
Hunger Games because it is about social and political suicide of a nation.
What does Edward Herrmann bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His voice animation of the characters
If you could take any character from Atlas Shrugged out to dinner, who would it be and why?

favorite! must read!
This book has made clear so many of the confusing aspects of our societies. I wish I had read this 15 years ago when I was a teenager.
I am so grateful for the rational and logical ideas shared in this book; For the insights into the machine of a looting government and the lazy way people can let others tell them what to think. I am going to recommend this to everyone and read it again. I'm going to have my children read it.

I struggled a bit during the first third, got back on the horse on the second and totally enjoyed the third.
The narration by Herr Herrmann is magnificent, and it made me stick with the book instead of an early drop. Very enjoyable to hear somebody mastering their task on the narration.
