About this listen

In the tomblike silence of an abandoned rock quarry, someone is trying to hide their dirty little secret - a secret that is about to be discovered....

FBI Special Agent Maggie O’Dell is just starting a vacation when she gets a call from her friend, psychologist Dr. Gwen Patterson. One of Gwen’s patients is missing on a trip to Connecticut. Can Maggie look into Joan Begley’s disappearance?

At first Maggie dismisses Gwen’s concern. But when the body of a woman is discovered in an abandoned rock quarry in Connecticut, Maggie heads to the small town on “unofficial” business. Soon the shocking news surfaces that more bodies have been discovered, and Maggie is drawn into a case that confounds both local law enforcement and a seasoned criminal profiler like herself.

But where is Joan Begley? Is she in fact the woman discovered buried in the quarry? Or is she the unwilling guest of a killer obsessed with possessing an unimaginable prize from his victims?

A good mystery for a long road trip.

It's a good who done it. I do enjoy the narrator. There were a couple of moments where it was too predictable, but overall, a good read.

Love the Author, not the narrator

Would you consider the audio edition of At the Stroke of Madness to be better than the print version?

I love audiobooks because one can be doing other things and still get a lot "read". But, I have been "reading" this series this weekend and have been being driven crazy with a noise in the background of many of the books.....sounds similar to a nail gun going off. Didn't the editor hear this noise? It caused me to get up and check my doors in the middle of the night, only to figure out that it was on the recording.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, love the "cases" and following Maggie's personal life.

Would you be willing to try another one of Tanya Eby’s performances?

No, not this narrator - she has driven me crazy this series with her mispronunciations of many things.....like "filet knife" it is not 'fill it', it is 'fil ey'; and U.S. AMRIID - would not be 'use amriid'; rifling - that she kept pronouncing as 'riff ling' instead of 'rahy-fling'. I could go on and on - it might be a good idea for an editor to catch these mistakes. We all make them but, when you are reading a book, it is so distracting to the listener. If I were reading, I would want someone to tell me that I was not pronouncing words correctly.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

laughed many times

Any additional comments?

Like the author a lot - usually, really like it when they keep the same narrator - but, not with this series.

Quick But Good

Kind of funny. I keep wondering why Maggie O'Dell gets herself into such dire situations.. I guess it's for our entertainment.
