Publisher's summary

The first in a thrilling new series from Emmy Award-winning TV host and journalist Tamron Hall, As The Wicked Watch follows a reporter as she unravels the disturbing mystery around the deaths of two young Black women, the work of a serial killer terrorizing Chicago.

When crime reporter Jordan Manning leaves her hometown in Texas to take a job at a television station in Chicago, she’s one step closer to her dream: a coveted anchor chair on a national network.

Jordan is smart and aggressive, with unabashed star-power, and often the only woman of color in the newsroom. Her signature? Arriving first on the scene—in impractical designer stilettos. Armed with a master’s degree in forensic science and impeccable instincts, Jordan has been able to balance her dueling motivations: breaking every big story—and giving a voice to the voiceless.

From her time in Texas, she’s covered the vilest of human behaviors but nothing has prepared her for Chicago. Jordan is that rare breed of a journalist who can navigate a crime scene as well as she can a newsroom—often noticing what others tend to miss. Again and again, she is called to cover the murders of Black women, many of them sexually assaulted, most brutalized, and all of them quickly forgotten.

All until Masey James—the story that Jordan just can’t shake, despite all efforts. A 15-year-old girl whose body was found in an abandoned lot, Masey has come to represent for Jordan all of the frustration and anger that her job often forces her to repress. Putting the rest of her work and her fraying personal life aside, Jordan does everything she can to give the story the coverage it desperately requires, and that a missing Black child would so rarely get.

There’s a serial killer on the loose, Jordan believes, and he’s hiding in plain sight.

Unexpected

I enjoy Tamron Hall on air, but writing isn't for everyone. I took the chance and this was really good! There are a lot of characters so it took a bit for me to keep them straight but I really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to the next one. Great job Tamron!

Good Story

The story was good, slow at times but overall worth the listen. The person reading did okay just wish she would do better at changing her voice when changing characters, at times I would get confused on which character was speaking.

What the what!?!

It was really really good. As a Chicagoland native, I could visualize every neighborhood. There are a few Chicago colloquialisms like MLK which we just refer to as King Drive but that will be less important to others not from around here. The story had me reflecting on myself and career motivations. It had me seeing the seedy underbelly of Chicago. It had me emotional and sometimes responding to something that was said as if I was having the conversation. Looking forward to the next book.

Good story, but …

The narrator was so unprepared. I nearly stopped listening a few times. She was halting, pausing inappropriately, and just didn’t keep the story moving. It was as though this was her first time reading the story.

So Authentic

I love a great Chicago read that has all of the ups and downs of investigative journalism that Tamron Hall brings to the table, the narration was so wonderful I almost felt like I could hear Tamron behind each turn of phrase as only she delivers. it's an awesome story that those growing up in the large urban city of Chicago can really feel

Super relatable characters and energetic story!

Can’t wait for the second one to be released! So glad I heard the first book in the series well after the release date, because waiting for the next one, would drive me nuts!
I’ve been a fan of Tameron Hall ever since a friend of mine was featured on her crime show- Where Are They Now.
I had to check the narrator’s name again, because she does a PHENOMENAL job of bringing the Jordan Manning character to life in Tameron’s voice — both figuratively and literally.
I’m a big buff of crime and/or spy thriller fiction. I don’t pretend to be a literary critic. Ha! Although I do know a decent story and engaging characters well enough. This book really had a fantastic mix of social justice commentary (without being too heavy handed), fast-paced storytelling, realistic language and monologues of the main character, and of course, mystery elements in crime solving.
I enjoy almost all my choices in books I listen to, but this is the first one in a while, where I didn’t dread my crappy to-do list! I had great entertainment to keep me going!!

Too long to evolve

Great story, WAY TOO MANY chapters on character development of people that didn’t wind up being key (enough) players in the story. It didn’t start to “get good” until chapter 12 of 18 and there really wasn’t much suspense at all. It’s a shame cuz it’s a great story. It would’ve been better if it was less about Jordan and all her thoughts and feelings, and more about the criminals, their activities and their pasts.

Great writing.

I loved the story and the way the plot was thought out and carried through. A skillfully written commentary on society done in a fair, non condemning way.
