2021 Washington Post Best Books of the Year

From Liane Moriarty, the number one New York Times best-selling author of Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers, comes Apples Never Fall, an audiobook that looks at marriage, siblings, and how the people we love the most can hurt us the deepest.

The Delaney family love one another dearly - it’s just that sometimes they want to murder each other....

If your mother was missing, would you tell the police? Even if the most obvious suspect was your father?

This is the dilemma facing the four grown Delaney siblings.

The Delaneys are fixtures in their community. The parents, Stan and Joy, are the envy of all of their friends. They’re killers on the tennis court, and off it their chemistry is palpable. But after 50 years of marriage, they’ve finally sold their famed tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives. So why are Stan and Joy so miserable?

The four Delaney children - Amy, Logan, Troy, and Brooke - were tennis stars in their own right, yet as their father will tell you, none of them had what it took to go all the way. But that’s okay, now that they’re all successful grown-ups and there is the wonderful possibility of grandchildren on the horizon.

One night a stranger named Savannah knocks on Stan and Joy’s door, bleeding after a fight with her boyfriend. The Delaneys are more than happy to give her the small kindness she sorely needs. If only that was all she wanted.

Later, when Joy goes missing, and Savannah is nowhere to be found, the police question the one person who remains: Stan. But for someone who claims to be innocent, he, like many spouses, seems to have a lot to hide. Two of the Delaney children think their father is innocent, two are not so sure - but as the two sides square off against each other in perhaps their biggest match ever, all of the Delaneys will start to reexamine their shared family history in a very new light.

Critic reviews

"Audiobook narrator Caroline Lee’s voice is an irresistible, visceral joy; like the best audiobook narrators, her delivery is endlessly malleable, shifting nimbly across accent, register and tone to create a sense that one is inside the story rather than peering in from the outside." (Farhad Manjoo, The New York Times)

"[Lee] adds a crisp warmth that makes for an easy and absorbing listen." (Alan Rosenberg, The Providence Journal)

"Australian narrator Caroline Lee is an amazing performer who digs so deeply into her characters' personas that listeners will become addicted to each witty, insightful, and gutsy one." (AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner)

Editor's Pick

I fell hard for this listen
Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty is an ignore-your-children-and-household-chores type of all-consuming listen. Moriarty’s talent was on full display—no detail is wasted in this audiobook, and it continually amazed me how she tied each piece of the narrative together. When the matriarch of the tennis-famous Delaney family goes missing, all eyes are on the husband, but Moriarty mysteries are never that simple. The author has once again teamed up with Caroline Lee, who delivers on the story’s slightly sinister vibe with her raspy Australian timbre. I can’t stop talking about this one (even my husband is now listening so he can understand the obsession), and I can’t wait to geek out with my fellow editors once they’ve devoured it too. —Katie O., Audible Editor

Reader is Ace! Story is highly entertaining

There’s a few complaints about the reader Caroline Lee. It’s possible these people haven’t listened to prior Moriarty books, having only seen the made for TV versions. Caroline Lee is the voice of all of Liane Moriarty novels as well as other accomplished authors. Her somewhat squeaky voice gives the books a sense of personal authenticity to Moriarty’s all too human characters, mostly women, who want to be understood and accepted.

The story line is fun, the characters interesting and the writing well paced and clear. Well worth 18 hours of your time.

The narrator is awesome!

Maria Costa

I listen every chance I got and loved the story! I don’t get the complaints about narrator, I enjoyed very much, the voices she makes for each character is just perfect, I’m tempted to look at other books narrated by her.

Just made my favorites list!

I love Liane Moriarty's stories. Her unique writing. Her characters. I want to meet this family. I want to sit at the table with them, haha! Of course, the narration is spot on. I could almost start this one over again and I just finished! I feel like if Marc Cherry and Liane Moriarty collaborated, a film version would be perfection! But please keep Nicole Kidman's hands off this one! 🙏 Highly recommend for the exciting unfolding of this story through multiple (and interesting!) points of view, humor, and suspense!

Loved it!

Thoroughly enjoyed the story, it’s characters and details, as well as the orator. Amusing, charming and so relatable in a family and generational perspective. Just lovely!

GREAT Read!

I disagree that all the tennis talk was off-putting. It was nothing hard to understand and just gave a framework to reveal the family dynamics. I thoroughly enjoyed how the characters developed. They will likely make it a movie or series but this writer really helps you understand the way people think, that's why it's so easy to connect with them. I love the narration. I wish she would read my my list of things to do each day. I'm sure I'd get more done!!

The Apple Never Falls

It took a very long time for the book to become interesting. I didn't like the narrator's squeaky voice. It ended okay, but not a great read.

First time for both

I have watched shows made from this authors stories , so I had high hopes for listening to her latest book. I love a British or Aussie accent and have listened to another audible book read by a wonderful Australian female reader. Sadly, this one lived up to the bad reviews posted. It made the experience of listening to the story not a pleasant listen which is unfortunate. I finished the book because of the author and her previous books which I have
watched made into a limited series for television. Overall I can’t say I enjoyed this enough to recommend.

Hard to sink into

I almost gave up on this book several times. I could not stand the narrator’s nasally voice and it took a long time for this book to get exciting. It was really good once it finally took off.

Couldn’t stop listening!

The Australian accent was a bit jarring at times but other than that, loved the story and character development
