Acerca de esta escucha

Dr. Nia Wallace has built her career on untangling the secrets hidden in DNA, but nothing has prepared her for the mystery her own genes are about to reveal. When a new ancestry app connects her to a sibling she never knew existed, Nia is drawn to the remote Louisiana town of Darbonne, a place steeped in history—and secrets.

The town is almost too perfect: the people are welcoming, the streets are idyllic, and the community seems to thrive in isolation. But beneath the surface, Nia senses something is off. Faces look too familiar, questions are met with vague answers, and the deeper she digs into her connection to Darbonne, the more the town tightens its grip.

As Nia’s search for answers leads her into the heart of the town’s origins, she begins to question everything she thought she knew about herself, her family, and the price of progress. Darbonne’s past isn’t just haunting—it’s alive. And leaving may not be an option.

Anywhere But Here is a psychological thriller that explores identity, the legacy of oppression, and the boundaries of scientific ethics. Perfect for readers who enjoy slow-burn suspense and richly woven mysteries, this is a story that asks: how far would you go to uncover the truth, and what would it cost to escape it?

story line is pretty decent but the AI narrator takes away so much from the book

It was a good story, I totally disliked the virtual voice. Her Father's name was never given, that was the main question. So it was a few parts I feel was left unanswered. I enjoyed it nonetheless!!

It kept me engaged, but I don't see the big rave about it.

Gorgeous cover!!! But the story itself was not engaging. The virtual reader narrator absolutely gave nothing to the story. Mispronounced words and lack of inflection when needed.
May have enjoyed the story and had a better understanding of it had been read by an actual human. I hope at some point the author is able to contract someone to do so!

Meh

It was an interesting premise. A little slow at times but overall a decent listen.

I didn’t mind the AI voice too much. There were a few weird inflections and there could have been more excitement through the “action” scenes to build suspense. But, honestly, I’ve heard worse “real” human narrators.

The story is a great concept and start. Id say the end left too many questions unanswered.
Namely:
1. Why is Mia Wallace black when everyone else is white? In a story where genetics is the central theme this singular question is enough to throw you out of the story.
2. Why introduce a key character from Mia’s youth at the end without cleaning up the connection?
3. Is Mia’s father still alive or not? Who is he? The story never fully answers that.
4. Is Mia’s mother actually suffering from early onset dementia or is she also a victim of the town? It seems 100% unlikely they would have chosen her to birth Mia if she had any chances of such illnesses in her future.

Great Start

But not really…. This is a weird story line but it makes you really think. Would it be so bad to make sure you have a healthy blood line of people. It’s scary because are you killing them or what. It took me a minute to really get invested but once truly invested it was really good.

GET OUT

Virtual voice three me off a bit and there was a bit of repetition in the last 5-7 chapters. Overall good story.

Good Premise

I enjoyed the storyline and the beginning was engaging. The middle became stagnant and the end was abrupt. There were too many unanswered questions that makes the book not worth the time.

Not My Favorite Ending

The character Reed came and went kinda fast, Nia did get to know about Darbonne and what was going on there but no matter how things seemed to have turned out she was forever a part of it FOREVER

Nia’s determination to find the truth

The story itself was pretty good. However, editing could have been better because there were a couple of instances where continuity was way off. The worst thing about this audio book was the narration. The speech inflection and pronunciation was way off in some places and really detracted from the story. I believe the presentation would have been better overall with a live narrator.

AI narration has a long way to go.
