Publisher's summary

Michael Phillips is one of today's most popular Christian authors. He has written more than four dozen novels, with over five million copies in print. Angels Watching Over Me is the first book in a stirring saga that follows two women, one black, one white, in the aftermath of the Civil War.

Before the war, Rosewood Plantation is large and prosperous. During the war years, women and slaves struggle to keep it running. But in the bloody days following the Northern victory, a marauding band of Union soldiers ravages Rosewood. Katie, the master's young daughter, and Mayme, a slave girl, are the only survivors of the carnage. Now the two have only each other, and their shared faith in God, to rely on.

As their friendship grows, so does their conviction that God is directing them to work together. Michael Phillips' flair for creating engaging characters and narrator Susan Spain's thoughtful reading are a perfect match.

Rather Disappointing

It starts off believable. But for two girls, regardless of their color, to run an entire plantation and keep up the pretense the parents are still alive - is not believable or realistic. Maybe if I hadn’t already listened to so many of Lynn Austin‘s historical stories sat in the same time period I wouldn’t have been so disappointed with this story.

Angels

Amazing story about the devastation in the wake of the Civil War. History
made real by this heartfelt story.
Perhaps there is another book to follow because this first book
does not seem to have an ending.

Brings About Soul Searching

There is an astounding depth to the human spirit portrayed through these two young women. Their growing connection to God is profound as they build upon their simple faith recognizing God is watching over them in angelic ways.

Keeps your attention

Life is a struggle and sometimes we only have God himself to pull us through, but then, sometimes He sends another person! Very interesting story.

Wonderfully engaging

I started this book with not a little trepidation. I love Michael Phillips, but this seems so different from other things he has written, wondering if I would find a story about two women in the 1800’s South interesting. Boy, cannot wait to the next one!

Loved it !!

I loved this book. I enjoy stories that take place during the civil war. This was a good one. Finally a story that has a happy ending during that time. About time.

Transported us

We listened to this on a long trip, it was great. The reader was excellent, and the story was as well, the only disappointment was that it ended, and we were expecting a bit more.

The characters are well developed, and we all enjoyed the story…good reader. Good book for car rides with multiple generations.

Intriguing Tale

This intriguing tale is good, but not my favorite. First, the narrator is pretty good, but sometimes sounds like she's reading rather than acting the part (making it sound fake). Second, it's a bit distracting the way the writer has unnecessary "I said," or "she said," clauses. It detracts from feeling like you are right there watching. Third, the books were written to make you have to buy all in order to have any sense of a complete story, rather than a series of books that can stand on their own. But the tale is good, and so I will continue to the next one.
