About this listen

Preston & Child continue their #1 bestselling series featuring FBI Special Agent Pendergast and Constance Greene, as they take a final stand against New York’s deadliest serial killer: Pendergast’s own ancestor…and Constance’s greatest enemy.

A desperate bargain is broken…

Constance Greene confronts Manhattan’s most dangerous serial killer, Enoch Leng, bartering for her sister's life—but she is betrayed and turned away empty-handed, incandescent with rage.

A clever trap is set…

Unknown to Leng, Pendergast’s brother, Diogenes, appears unexpectedly, offering to help—for mysterious reasons of his own. Disguised as a cleric, Diogenes establishes himself in New York's notorious Five Points slum, manipulating events like a chess master, watching Leng’s every move…and awaiting his own chance to strike.

A vengeful angel will not be deterred…

Meanwhile, as Pendergast focuses on saving the unstable Constance in her fanatical quest for vengeance, she strikes out on her own: to rescue her beloved siblings from a tragic fate and take savage retribution on Leng. But Leng is one step ahead and has a surprise for them all…

Great follow up

I waited a year for this book to come out! Because the last book left us hanging. And this was quite creative and the ending was very creative. Now the question is will they write another one? I hope so. I miss the author who did the first 20 books I think he was amazing and his Pendergast voice was absolutely fabulous. There has yet to be an narrator that can stand up to his Pendergast boys. But unfortunately, he’s not on this earth anymore.

One of the best in the series

I’ve been a longtime fan of the Pendergast novels and this is one of the best! Writing style, story and character development are at Preston and Child’s best! I feel like they really upped their game for this book, even compared to its immediate predecessor.

Ties up loose ends

Always love the Pendergast books! This one seemed shorter than the previous-which only indicates that I would like it to go on twice as long! I hope more stories are to come with these characters.

Preston & Child have done it again!

Pure genius! It amazes me that Preston and Child have kept the Pendergast series going so well. Even after 23+ novels (spin-offs considered). I’ve also read/listened to their independent works and while I’ve enjoyed those, too, their creativity together is superb! They are able to take some of the most far-fetched scenarios and write them into a mystery/suspense plot in such a was as to negate the need for suspension of disbelief. Their combined intellect makes for the most perfectly gruesome, deliciously dark and intriguing elements. Their stories combine the dark gothic elements of Poe and the Brothers Grimm with the suspense of Hitchcock, horror and depravity of S. King, psychological thrill of M. N. Shyamalan, and the lyrical rhythm of Neil Gaiman all wrapped up in the mystery and intrigue of Doyle. The depth of their characters, the quality of descriptive writing, and the wit and intelligence in the dialogue are unbelievable. I have been a fan of the Pendergast novels since I stumbled onto a CD box set of The Book of the Dead (Diogenes Trilogy) in a bargain bin at a book store in 2007. After learning it was part of a sub-series, I listened to the first of the three, then searched until I found the entire series. I own all the paperbacks as well as every audiobook (some books on cassette from the pre-digital age, CDs, and digital). I have listened to and read (and reread) these books numerous times. I mark my calendar when new ones are announced, and they remain my favorite books! I love the historical, philosophical, cultural, and relational elements of the stories as much as the blood, guts, horror, and gore! I admit, however (spoiler if you haven’t read book 9 Cemetery Dance), I was gobsmacked by Bill Smithback’s death, and I still haven’t recovered. The second loss of Helen was tough, too. And the hits just keep coming! Just call me a masochist because I love it. Pendergast is perfection, and I can’t help it—but I’ve always secretly crushed on Diogenes, too. Way to put a new, stellar spin on an old literary fascination (time-travel)! Keep it up Preston and Child! 🖤AXLP🩶

Angel of Vengeance

Outstanding as always, new narrator is doing better but someone needs to let him know how to pronounce “D’Agosta”😁

Pendergast et al Travel in Time

I will not prattle on, I could. I love Pendergast. Suffice to say, so many of my fav characters (including the mansion and all its secrets) all together, none of them letting me down. Not as heart stopping as some previous adventures, but satisfying. I must admit to having a new found appreciation for Diogenes. If you have enjoyed the Pendergast series so far, do not fear, you are about to embark on another fine journey.

Conclusion to The Cabinet of Dr Leng

An excellent conclusion to The Cabinet of Dr Leng, so be sure to read that book first. Fast paced and picks up right where the previous book left off. This book does not disappoint!

Worth the wait for a great ending!

It was a long time coming, left us hanging from the previous novel. But this one was worth the wait! Shout out to Jefferson Mays as he perfects his "honeyed drawl New Orleans accent"!
