Publisher's summary

Evangeline has spent her teenage years in obscurity. Her foster parents have the emotional aptitude of robots, and her classmates barely acknowledge her existence. About to turn 18 and feeling like a social pariah, she is desperate to connect with someone. Anyone.

When Evangeline meets Sophie after literally stumbling upon her café, she believes she's found that connection. Willing to do anything to keep it, she accepts a job as Sofie's assistant and drops everything to fly to Manhattan, where she is thrust into a luxurious world of Prada, diamonds, and limitless cash. With such generosity and kindness, it's easy for Evangeline to dismiss certain oddities...like Sofie's erratic and sometimes violent behavior and the monstrous guard dogs. She's even willing to dismiss her vivid dreams of mob-style murders, beautiful homeless people living in caves, and white-eyed demons that haunt her each night as figments of her imagination - especially when one of those figments is the gorgeous Caden. When she wakes up with bite marks on her neck, the fairy tale quickly turns into a nightmare. She slowly unravels the mystery surrounding Sofie and friends, and the reality of the bites and the "dreams". What she discovers is far more mysterious and terrible than anything she could have imagined.

In a world where everyone has motive to lie for personal gain, Evangeline must decide which deception is least likely to get her killed.

Just couldn't stay hooked

I've tried for two weeks, & I couldn't get hooked on this book. I love K.A. Ticker's other books and have read all, but this one does not live up to her others. (This could be for my own personal lack of imagination and love for vampire storylines though.)

Very young adult. Couldn’t finish

Perhaps the other books will make this series better and I wanted to like it. It had a good start but meandered soon after and I didn’t find it all that interesting anymore. The side characters were sort of “meh”. The end goal was flimsy at best. The antagonists were very weak in terms of their motivations. The protagonist was too busy simping over MML that that was the forefront of her problems. It lost steam even before it reached the middle and I held on even then. But part way through I didn’t want to waste my time anymore.

Likely it will appeal to some but not my cup of tea.

Narrator was great though.

Great story

I enjoyed Anathema. It was a lovely story. And the narrator made it an easy listen.

Congeniality feel!

Okay, This is a Urban fantasy paranormal YA romance by K.A. Tucker isn’t bad at all. Idk why there are so many bad reviews. I truly love her writing style, and the well developed characters! I did listen and read at the same time...it is more intriguing with audio. Overall, I dig the plot even if it’s a bit predictable. I think it’s quite an adventure and soon enough, the more I read, the more I am intrigued. Perhaps, the heroine or female lead is a little native and not so clever and yes, there is insta-love with a boy/love at first sight (not my cup of tea) but hey, she’s young!!! Give her some slack! She is not a superhero or strong badass girl but something about figuring things out and having faith things will work out on the end, you know. How to describe her...she’s very miss congeniality and she just grows on ya! I do love how the author describe places in the story and I really dig it a lot. I will continue the series!
