About this listen

Karan Johar is synonymous with success, panache, quick wit, and outspokenness, which sometimes inadvertently creates controversy and makes headlines. KJo, as he is popularly called, has been a much-loved Bollywood film director, producer, actor, and discoverer of new talent. With his flagship Dharma Production, he has constantly challenged the norms, written and rewritten rules, and set trends.

But who is the man behind the icon we all know? Baring all for the first time in his autobiography, An Unsuitable Boy, KJo reminisces about his childhood, the influence of his Sindhi mother and Punjabi father, obsession with Bollywood, foray into films, friendships with Aditya Chopra, SRK and Kajol, his love life, the AIB roast, and much more. In his trademark frank style, he talks about the ever-changing face of Indian cinema, challenges, and learnings, as well as friendships and rivalries in the industry.

Honest, heart-warming and insightful, An Unsuitable Boy is both the story of the life of an exceptional filmmaker at the peak of his powers and of an equally extraordinary human being who shows you how to survive and succeed in life.

It's ok

Some good parts. Some fairly boring. Could have been shorter by a couple of chapters atleast. Gives you a good sense of the author though.

Respect 🙏

Karan bhai, lately to my great surprise I have heard and read a lot of negative about you. And I was a bit disappointed. In the and I've been a big fan of you, Shahrukh bhai and Kajol for mote than 20 years now. Because you all are unique, you all have out-of-the-box mindsets and a very good sense of humor. Also because your films are made for the whole family with the focus on mutual respect and love, and that are the most beautiful and important things in this life. But after Shushant bhai's death, as an Armenian living in Europe, I was shocked by the social media posts where they accuse you and Shahrukh bhai of many bad things. I've never been in India so I didn't know what people think of you there. Actually, I always thought that not only outside of India but also in your country you all are well respected and loved. I thought there was no other way. Because even I, as an Armenian future screenwriter and filmmaker from Belgium, always wanted to pursue a career in Bollywood and not in Europe, Asia or Hollywood.
This choice was made consciously because I have become the person I am now mainly because of you and Shahrukh bhai. I have always considered you both as my greatest mentors. I have learned from you to respect the elderly, not take yourself too seriously, love your family and relatives sincerely, and always choose the right path over the most beneficial! I even wanted to give my first script to you and Shahrukh bhai without asking anything in return, just to say thank you, for all the life lessons that you have given me and my 5 children through movies, tv shows and interviews that have made us so strong, human and unique . And now everything turns out not to be the way I thought it was?

I am very happy that I listened to my inner voice and bought this audiobook after all. Because after reading this book many things have fallen into places. Now I know exactly who you are and what your mission in this world is and what your vision is.
I know you can't stand FAKE. I now know that you want to help others and create opportunities for the newcomers, that you are self-confident and not selfish, and that you have a big heart but you don't love making films about the poor and you love making films about the rich people, because you thing that rich people also can have problems and they also have feelings, and your right. I also think that if someone is poor he always have a chance to work and study hard and become rich. Like I did, or Shahrukh bhai did. I know one thing surely, if you really want something you will get it. For me there is no I can't, there is only I don't want to. That means if you are poor and you have problems you better go and work hard and become rich by yourself instead of blaming the rich for everything or for not helping you. Begging for help is never an option, self-development is! I also know now that success was not given so easily to you, you worked your ass off for that. I can imagin the emotions and feelings that you mention in this book. Your life road is very much like the life road of me, my parents and children, it is a mix of ours. For example, one of my 4 sons and my daughter are also overweight, like you were. So I can very well put myself in your mother's shoes. I lost my father in my 20s. And I am now also responsible for my mother, like you are for yours. I am married, but I do everything by myself like an single would do. And I also love to follow various courseses. I have many interests and talents. And I have always participated in competitions and always won the first place like you did. I am also very tolerant of all religions. And I am creative entrepreneur. I have always been the party animal and now I no longer need the hustle and bustle or recognition. Because of you I now know for sure that I too will in the and achieve all my goals and make my dreams come true, because your book is a source of inspiration and guide for me. It is very motivating to hear how an introverted person like you has pursued his goals and made his own dreams and the dreams of his loved ones come true. My oldest son is also an introvert, and I was concerned about him and his future, now I am not. I could never imagine that you were an introvert. I actually think you're more an ambivert like me. It is a pity that these days you can't see friends who support each others for years and care so much about each others and wish each others success, just as you and your friends (Shahrukh bhai, Kajol, Gauri and the rest) did. As Woodrow T. Wilson once said. "Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together". Sadly enough, many people don't understand the value of friendship. It is very inspiring to hear that Shahrukh bhai has been so down to earth all his life and that in your adult years you have never been guided by the opinions of others anymore and that you have always relied on your own intuition and listened to your inner voice.

The book is very well written and you read it very well. I finished it in 1 day. This is a book I would recommend to anyone. Especially the ones who have watched or are now watching Bollywood movies ore the ones with an out-of-the-box mindset.

I wish you anything that you wish for yourself.

Hope to meet you someday.

Positive greetings and respect,
Tina Dalì (Anush) from Belgium 🇧🇪

Amazing insight into a brilliant mind

I loved Karan's in your face depiction of his own life. I've always admired his unabashed style from movies to fashions and everything in between; but behind the facade is a brilliant, vulnerable, beautiful human being. It's easy to listen to his voice. He comes across as a genuine human and tells you like it is. I would highly recommend this book. It's sincere, eye opening and inspiring all at once.

It's like a running on story.

This book really didn't had a real foundation. It's Basically what is going on on in his life at this time and his past; Feels like it's a lot of propaganda, Doesn't feel legitimate.
