About this listen
Sumptuous and addictive, An Education in Malice is a dark academia tale of blood, secrets and insatiable hungers from S.T. Gibson, author of the cult hit A Dowry of Blood.
Deep in the forgotten hills of Massachusetts stands Saint Perpetua’s College. Isolated and ancient, it is not a place for timid girls. Here, secrets are currency, ambition is lifeblood, and strange ceremonies welcome students into the fold.
On her first day of class, Laura Sheridan is thrust into an intense academic rivalry with the beautiful and enigmatic Carmilla. Together, they are drawn into the confidence of their demanding poetry professor, De Lafontaine, who holds her own dark obsession with Carmilla.
But as their rivalry blossoms into something far more delicious, Laura must confront her own strange hungers. Tangled in a sinister game of politics, bloodthirsty professors and magic, Laura and Carmilla must decide how much they are willing to sacrifice in their ruthless pursuit of knowledge.

Story
It takes a lot of commitment to make a marriage between a modern ceremonial magician and a chaos witch work, but when a malevolent entity takes up residence in Rhys and Moira's home, their love will be pushed to the limits. Brewing up a solution is easier said than done when your magical styles are polar opposites; throw a psychic ex and a secret society in the mix, and things are bound to get messy.

Lorelei Kaskel, a folklorist with a quick temper and an even quicker wit, is on an expedition with six eccentric nobles in search of a fabled spring. The magical spring promises untold power, which the king wants to harness in order to secure his reign over the embattled country of Brunnestaad. Lorelei is determined to use this opportunity to prove herself and make her wildest, most impossible dream come true: to become a naturalist, able to travel freely to lands she’s only read about.

The Lady knows the stories: how her eyes induce madness in men. The Lady knows she will be wed to the Scottish brute, who does not leave his warrior ways behind when he comes to the marriage bed. The Lady knows his hostile, suspicious court will be a game of strategy, requiring all of her wiles and hidden witchcraft to survive. But the Lady does not know her husband has occult secrets of his own. She does not know that prophecy girds him like armor. She does not know that her magic is greater and more dangerous, and that it will threaten the order of the world.

Story
If there is one thing you needed to know about me it is this: I hate vampires. They are useless, soul-sucking monsters that destroy everything in their path, even my own family. I joined The Order and became a vampire hunter for revenge, but I never would have guessed that my job would entail baby-sitting the vampire heir to the most powerful clan in the world. And if she thought I was going to break like the other hunters she has been through... she has another thing coming to her.

Story
Nadezhda is running away from her problems—mainly her family's supernatural murder cult that's constantly putting her loved ones in danger. Fortunately, her grandmother left her the house at the edge of a swamp life preserve so she can go off-grid for a while. It turns out the shack isn't the only thing she's inherited—the ancient kikimora who followed her family from Ukraine years ago is still dwelling in the swamp and she's looking for an offering.

Critic reviews
"An Education in Malice is an ode to girlhood; ribbons, blood, poetry, and rage. Gibson’s fang-sharp prose and unflinching honesty create a delicate and fearless exploration of loneliness, love, and—as the bridge between those two absolutes—longing."—Sydney J. Shields, author of The Honey Witch

Wizard West was dead for nearly an entire day before he noticed. And it is up to Faye, the daughter of West’s groundskeeper, to inform the wizard that he is a ghost who has lost all of his magical powers. (But not before the wizard tries transforming her into a cat!) To make matters worse, the enchanted castle of Celurdur—the only home that Faye has ever known—will fall apart at the next full moon if its foundation spells can’t be renewed.

Narration and writing are amazing
Writing this subject matter can very easily feel vulgar and cringey. The author manages to do nothing of that. It's just so good!! Despite the plot not having much to do with the source material, the author implements little easter eggs that will certainly please the ones who enjoy Le Fanu's Carmilla.

Sapphic Vampire Romance
I had asked for a dark sapphic romance and this book was recommended. I absolutely loved the word play throughout the book. I loved that spark and connection between the characters and I really enjoyed the character development. The story was a bit predictable but it made up for it with witty banter, delectable descriptions, and a story that was relatable.

The writing.
I am a huge fan of S.T Gibson as dowry of blood was my first read. However many people stated this was a DNF for them and that scared me away for a while. This is still just as brilliant of a book and I truly have not one bad thing to say especially for a retelling of Carmilla.

Beautiful Sapphic Vampire Story
I loved the characters, the narration was beautiful, and the plot held my attention. I devoured this audiobook in less than 24 hours. I LOVED it. I wish there was more. Highly recommend you read “Dowry of Blood” first because it’s set in that world and there is a character from that story that makes an appearance.

Another Nuanced Depiction of Abuse from S.T. Gibson
I was hesitant going into this one as Dowry Of Blood is my absolute favorite book, and I was scared that if the sequel was bad it would ruin it for me. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. As in Dowry of Blood, S.T. Gibson depicted a nuanced view on abusive relationships that I just adored. This time, exploring non-partner abuse and generational abuse in a way I quite liked. I also loved our main sapphic pairing and their rivals-to-lovers dynamic, though I do think it could have used more development. I will also say the ending to the book felt a bit sudden. I liked it nonetheless, but I wish we had had a bit more ramp-up to it. We did a lot of hearing about the eventual adversary, and not a lot of seeing her. Ultimately, I still loved this book and hope to see S.T. Gibson add more to this world in the future!
