It’s the house of their dreams. Former marine Harry and his wife, Sasha, have packed up their life and their golden retriever, Dash, and fled the corporate rat race to live off the land in rural Idaho. Their breathtaking new home sits on more than forty acres of meadow, aspen trees, and pine forest in the Teton Valley. Even if their friends and family think it’s a strange choice for an up-and-coming pair of urban professionals, Harry and Sasha couldn’t be happier about the future they’re building, all by their lonesome.

It’s the mid-'90s. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online. And in a fog-drenched cove at the edge of New England, something terrible awakens when a fisherman reels in a gruesome catch: the remains of a young woman. Remains still pulsing with furious life.

When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

My husband is a doctor. He’s smart and charming, and everybody trusts him. Except me. On the surface, it looks like I have it all–the perfect marriage, the perfect husband, the perfect life. But it’s far from the truth. Doctor Drew Devlin is not the respectable figure he makes out to be. The reason we moved to this beautiful, old property with a gorgeous view of the sea was because we needed to put our past behind us. It should’ve been a fresh start for us both.

You will wish you were alone at the end
"Alone" by Barbara De Smedt, narrated by the exceptionally talented Steve Connor, turned out to be an unexpected surprise for me. I had originally requested a shark novel but ended up with this gripping audiobook, and I couldn't be more thankful for the mix-up. This review will delve into the exceptional storytelling, complex characters, and outstanding narration that make "Alone" a must-listen experience.
Barbara De Smedt's "Alone" plunges us into the life of Julie Meskens, a young woman grappling with the recent loss of her mother. Seeking solace in her veterinary medicine studies and a lifestyle of one-night stands, Julie's life takes a sharp turn when she finds herself pregnant. What follows is a series of mysterious events that will keep you enthralled. As she inexplicably disappears from her apartment, leaving the police bewildered, a crucial question lingers: What could have happened to Julie?
The characters in "Alone" are multifaceted and brilliantly crafted, allowing listeners to connect with their struggles and motivations. One character that stands out is Tom, initially portrayed as the underdog. Tom's feelings of abandonment and longing are portrayed so convincingly that you can't help but empathize with him and root for a better outcome.
Julie, despite her flaws and seemingly reckless decisions, undergoes significant character development throughout the story. Her journey from self-destructive behavior to finding solace in unexpected places is beautifully written and captivating to witness. Barbara De Smedt's exploration of Julie's character is a testament to her skill as a writer, capturing the essence of a complex individual.
The plot of "Alone" is a masterpiece of suspense. De Smedt artfully weaves a multilayered narrative with unexpected twists and turns that will keep listeners engaged throughout. The way the story unfolds, shifting between different timelines and points of view, adds depth and intrigue to the narrative. It's a testament to the author's ability to keep the audience guessing until the very end.
The tension in the story is palpable, and as the mysteries surrounding Julie's disappearance unravel, you'll find yourself unable to stop listening. The pacing is expertly handled, with each chapter leaving you yearning for more. Barbara De Smedt's storytelling prowess shines brightly in "Alone."
Steve Connor's narration is nothing short of extraordinary. His voice breathes life into the characters and the story, adding depth and authenticity to the experience. Connor's ability to convey the emotions and nuances of each character is exceptional, enhancing the overall atmosphere of suspense and tension. The production quality of this audiobook is top-notch, with clear audio and spot-on pacing.
In conclusion, "Alone" by Barbara De Smedt, narrated by Steve Connor, is a captivating thriller that took me by surprise. Although I had originally requested a shark novel, I am grateful for the mix-up that introduced me to this compelling story. With its intriguing plot, well-developed characters, and outstanding narration, "Alone" is an audiobook that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Whether you're a fan of audiobooks or simply enjoy a good mystery, "Alone" is a must-listen that will leave you eager for more. Barbara De Smedt and Steve Connor have crafted a masterpiece that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression.

Brilliant
Maybe I'm the psycho but I was rooting for Oscar. He seemed like the underdog and lashed out at Julie for what he viewed as abandonment. I empathized with Tom and felt he deserved better. Julie blew him off for her wild, wanton, loose morales and alcohol , until she needed his support. Finally , when she's in confinement she comes to appreciate Tom. Smh. Lol. I never liked Julie because of her low morales and drinking to excess until she couldn't!!! Poor Oscar. He needed mental help and the dark ending exhibited that. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest opinion. The narrator did an excellent job bringing the characters and story to life. Great production quality.
