About this listen

Bea has barely been scraping by since her husband died. After falling for a telephone scam, she loses everything and is forced to abandon her trailer. With only two-thirds of a tank in her old van, she heads toward the Pacific Ocean with her cat - on a mission to reclaim what's rightfully hers, even if it means making others pay for what she lost.

When fifteen-year-old Allie's parents are jailed for tax fraud, she's sent to a group home. But when her life is threatened by another resident, she knows she has to get out. She escapes only to find she has nowhere to go - until fate throws Allie in Bea's path.

Reluctant to trust each other, much less become friends, the two warily make their way up the Pacific Coast. Yet as their hearts open to friendship and love from the strangers they meet on their journey, they find the courage to forge their own unique family - and begin to see an imperfect world with new eyes.

Great read..and good for teens too!

If you have ever wanted to know what could happen to a teen with no home!
This girl was lucky but many aren't!
Loved the contrast and growing connection between the 15 year old girl and the crotchety old woman. Has a couple good chuckles! The generation gap made for some very interesting thoughts.

A timely tale with carefully drawn characters

Catherine Ryan Hyde brings some all too common current social issues into focus for those of us fortunate enough not to be living them. This is an engaging story entwining two very different generations.

A Female ‘Ove’

Fans of the (rightly so) incredibly popular ‘A Man Called Ove’ will likely find this story resonate. A crotchety old woman and a feisty young girl - both the victims of injustice. Their stories, written separately and then entertwined, are human to the core. I fell in love with both and screamed at their stubbornness alternately. This was a real joy to read and I’d love a follow up to see how these two are doing now.

LOVED this story!

I usually only listen to audiobooks in the car, but kept listening as much as I could at home too because I couldn't wait to keep going. Delightful story and one I could actually see happening in real life.

Made me want to go hug a stranger

Any additional comments?

Fantastic. Held me rapt for the entire time. Bea, a senior citizen got scammed and had NOTHING left except a van and 2/3 a tank of gas. She and her cat Rachael have to live in that van and move to cooler climes. Allie, a very good girl who is totally honest, also finds herself homeless because of her parents bad deeds and is put into the child protective system. It is NOT protective and she ends up on the street, also homeless and in grave danger. Bea reluctantly saves Allie and they both end up in the van. Be a is a grouchy woman and Allie is enthusiastic. They go on a great adventure and the listener has this great adventure along with them. They meet people who are kind enough to help strangers. It is really a good story
