About this listen

Once bitten. Twice burned. Forever bonded.

Don't miss this riveting and romantic spin-off series from Jenn Burke, author of Not Dead Yet.

Paranormals are dying - all over the city, with no explanation, and only one thing in common: Their magic is missing.

Vampire and private investigator Evan Fournier isn't supposed to be taking on paranormal cases, but when the murderer hits close to home, he agrees to look into it. The last thing he expects is to become a target himself - and then to become irrevocably bonded to the man who just tried to kill him.

With his memory gone and his soul bonded to a stranger, former firefighter Colin Zhang wants to be anywhere else. He doesn't have a damn clue why he just tried to kill Evan, and he didn't even know about magic until just now. The sooner he can get back to his real life, the better. But every time either of them tries to leave, pure agony stops them short.

Forced to work with Evan or suffer the consequences, Colin must excavate the secrets buried in his missing memories while battling two rising threats: the conspiracy behind the murder, and his mutual attraction to the bond mate he never wanted.

Contains mature themes.

great entertainment for my morning commute

I started listening to this after I finished the Wes and Hudson trilogy. While I liked Wes and Hudson, I must say I'm enjoying Evan even more. He's such a lovable vampire. I also like that this new trilogy is one continuous story broken into 3 books so it gives it more opportunity to develop.

Excellent Emotional Development!

Tim Paige did a great job narrating this book! The story development was good, but the main thing that stood out was the Emotional development of the characters. However, I was a little less than thrilled by how the main characters kept hurting each other and the way some of the emotional and physical abuse wasn't exactly addressed. Most incidents were immediately talked about and “fixed”, but there were a few occasions, especially at the beginning where a main character was hurt and they let it go because the other person was going through a lot. I get it. It was a mistake or accident, but WOW. How many mistakes or accidents is a person really expected to compartmentalize? Maybe this was a good realistic portrayal of how some domestic abuse incidents occur and are unresolved, yet forgiven, but it was heartbreaking to read. And it sure didn't endear me to the character who consistently administered the abuse, albeit not necessarily intentionally. I guess that's the second chance theme that's also being carried out in this series, but no. I’m hoping SOMEONE in the next book points this out if it happens again or the characters themselves address how their being treated directly. Not ok.

Story is good but narration didn’t work for me

I read this book when it first came out, so a while before listening to the audio. The story is the first in a spin off series from the Not Dead Yet series. Some of the story elements bothered me in the reading and were enhanced as bothersome in hearing the story read to me. Some character inconsistencies and some things that just didn’t work or were unbelievable.

In addition, narration just didn’t work for me. The voices were not as I envisioned them (that’s a me problem) but they also were inconsistent and easily confused I found. Additionally, I’m not sure what kind of editing was done but there are quite a few errors. Words mispronounced, pauses where there shouldn’t be pauses, inappropriate inflections etc. Quite often it struck me like the narrator was recording this on a first read through and not keeping up with what was happening with the story. It wasn’t horrible it just distracted me and that takes away from my enjoyment of a book. It’s always a cardinal sun for me.
