About this listen

A mind-bending new novel inspired by the twisted and wondrous works of Lewis Carroll....

In a warren of crumbling buildings and desperate people called the Old City, there stands a hospital with cinderblock walls that echo the screams of the poor souls inside. In the hospital, there is a woman. Her hair, once blond, hangs in tangles down her back. She doesn't remember why she's in such a terrible place. Just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood.

Then, one night, a fire at the hospital gives the woman a chance to escape, tumbling out of the hole that imprisoned her, leaving her free to uncover the truth about what happened to her all those years ago. Only something else has escaped with her. Something dark. Something powerful. And to find the truth, she will have to track this beast to the very heart of the Old City, where the rabbit waits for his Alice.

Not your typical Alice

Really enjoyed this book towards 50% it really started to pick up and it became more dark. Darker than I expected! Looking forward to more works by Christina Henry!

Very Enjoyable

Any additional comments?

I love the story of Alice in Wonderland and I love when fairytales are retold. Even so, I was skeptical about the retelling of one of my favorite stories. I ended up liking this book very much and have already started listening to "Red Qeen." Also, the narration is good.

Great Story!

I enjoyed the bit of childish fiction mixed with adult themes. You can take a lot away from this book if you open your mind while reading it. It's an adventure and keeps you guessing what will come next !

Great book

There are things about the book (last 1/4) I wish had been structured differently (won’t say any more there) BUT I still really liked this book. The voice actor is wonderful.

Narrator keeps gasping into the mic

It seems to be a good story, although I've a ways to go. However, it's intensely frustrating to hear a soft gasp every 3-5 seconds. If you sit far away with a sweater bunched up and dropped on top of the speaker, it can't be heard; but it's not headphone worthy. Perhaps a silent keyboard/mute button combo, or leaning away from the mic, or a program that can ignore that would help in the future. It's a shame because I don't like leaving negative reviews that can hurt people.

Wow

Gave this a try after Lost Boys. Be warned, some very grim and hopeless scenes depicted but still a very good take.

I wish all audiobooks were this good

Amazing story and narrator. Probably my favorite fiction audiobook so far. The different voices were all strong and really set the tone for the strange world of Alice. Can't wait to check out Red Queen and some of Henry's other work!

Violence. Nothing but violence.

2.5 Stars. This book was not what I wanted or what I expected. Regardless of those expectations, this book was still extremely flawed. This book was not macabre, psychedelic, gory, or scary. It was violent. Just violent. So little happened in this book other than violence and sexual violence. It was less disturbing as it was exhausting. The author had some interesting things to say about madness and violence, but I felt that she was not concerned about anything other than violent scene after violent scene. The Walrus, White Rabbit, and Cheshire are little more than gangsters running violent sex rings with enslaved girls. Allusions to Alice in Wonderland were diluted enough to be meaningless. If the characters had different names, there would be little to connect the stories. All that being said, I finished the book and liked the two main characters as well as the author's accessible prose, but I just kept wishing for a change of pace or something more.

Very dark and I loved it

I've always loved dark interpretations of Alice in Wonderland and this is a great one. Not for the light of heart since there are a lot of very dark themes and events in the book but if you can deal with those themes then I definitely recommend it. Despite all the dark themes in the book I felt very hopeful throughout the novel and particularly towards the end you feel as though things are finally being set right in this Alice's world. Alice really transforms as a character as well and by the end of the novel has really grown into a powerful person with a say over her own life which is very satisfying.

Here's some content warnings in case you're unsure. Some of the dark themes and events you see this book include: murder, blood, madness, rape, attempted rape, kidnapping, forced prostitution, cannibalism, drugging via cake and powder, mental institutions and some not great care of patients, slavery, harm to sentient animals and mythological beings, and...that might be it? The world the book takes place in is very dark but if you get through mentions of the above then I think it's worth it in by the end of the book.
