About this listen

In this electrifying thriller by New York Times best seller Linda Castillo, Kate Burkholder must uncover a family's long-hidden past to solve a brutal murder.

When a tornado tears through Painters Mill and unearths human remains, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder finds herself tasked with the responsibility of identifying the bones - and notifying the family. Evidence quickly emerges that the death was no accident, and Kate finds herself plunged into a 30-year-old case that takes her deep into the Amish community to which she once belonged.

Meanwhile, turmoil of an emotional and personal nature strikes at the very heart of Kate's budding relationship with state agent John Tomasetti. A reality that strains their fragile new love to the breaking point and threatens the refuge they've built for themselves - and their future.

Under siege from an unknown assailant - and her own personal demons - Kate digs deep into the case only to discover proof of an unimaginable atrocity, a plethora of family secrets and the lengths to which people will go to protect their own.

Better and Better Series

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Not all of my friends would enjoy this series but some would and I will.

What about Kathleen McInerney’s performance did you like?

Kathleen McInerney does an excellent job. I am not an expert on Pennsylvania Dutch however.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, Kate Burkholder is a compelling character and much less damaged than at the beginning of the series.

Great

I just always enjoy Linda Castillo's books.
The reader's voice always makes a big difference for me in whether I can even finish a book on audio,.Kathleen is very easy to listen to.

Of course another GREAT book and performance !!!

The worst part about reading/listening to a GREAT book/reading series is the wait til the next one comes out. My Wife and I listened to Kathleen read Linda's words while digging the foundation for a storage shed on our property in 100 + degree weather in south Texas--certainly made the time pass quicker--sometimes our breaths' quickening with the story line. Ms Castillo's words, descriptions and plot are phenomenal and Ms McInerney's inflections, cadence and voice make it sound like a true friend relaying the story to you first hand. Come on Linda, get your team cracking with the next chapter in the Chief's life--PLEASE!

Gruesome at times

Kathleen McInerney did a great job with her delivery. I wish Linda Castillo would understand that she can write a great book without all the unnecessary vulgar language. This book had an intriguing story but there were many parts of the book that were down right gruesome. The Amish aren't all pure and this was conveyed in this storyline. The author was very knowledgeable about their culture. I won't be a spoiler for persons who have not read the book. I'm not sure I will purchase another book by this author due to the language.

Another can't stop listening by Linda Castillo

I've enjoyed everyone of her books, both for her writing style & that the story is set about 30 from where I grew up. The fact that when she describes some of the establishments that are so similar to the ones I saw, makes the story more real to me. My very favorite Christmas decoration came fro one of the tourist shops owned by an Amish family. It was Santa, hat in hand, kneeling on one knee to worship the baby Jesus.

Good story, with some very interesting twists and turns. Lots of personal growth for the heroine and her man. Enjoyed this one a lot.
