About this listen
Nick Woods and your favorite members of S3 (Marcus, Truck, and Red) plunge back into action again. This time he and his team are deployed to Afghanistan, where the Taliban is poised to seize the capital city of Kabul and take over the country for good.
The Taliban is well led by an impressive spiritual warrior, and, making matters worse, America's political leadership is sick of investing men and resources into a war that's now lasted 15 years. Nick and the nearly 50 members of Shield, Safeguard, and Shelter are sent to somehow find a way to avert the looming threat. Unfortunately for them, they'll soon find out that they're fighting more than just the Taliban.

The Taliban and their allies were infiltrating everywhere, poised to reclaim Kandahar Province, their strategically vital onetime capital. To stop them, the NATO coalition launched Operation Medusa, the largest offensive in its history. Story
When Donovan Campbell's platoon deployed to Ramadi in the spring of 2004, they believed they'd be spending most of their time building schools, training police, and making friends with the citizens. But shortly after arriving, when Campbell awoke to the chilling cry of "Jihad, Jihad, Jihad!" echoing from minaret to minaret across the city, he knew they had an altogether different situation on their hands.

In 2009 Clinton Romesha of Red Platoon and the rest of the Black Knight Troop were preparing to shut down Command Outpost Keating, the most remote and inaccessible in a string of bases built by the US military in Nuristan and Kunar in the hope of preventing Taliban insurgents from moving freely back and forth between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Three years after Keating's construction, the army was finally ready to concede what the men on the ground had known immediately: It was simply too isolated and too dangerous to defend.

America has one force with the single mission of direct action to capture or kill the enemy. That force is the 75th Ranger Regiment. Staff Sergeant Paul Martinez was a Ranger Sniper with the 75th Rangers during the desperate fighting in Afghanistan in 2011 when the United States made the decision to try to withdraw from Afghanistan. It was never going to be easy. There were still a large number of senior Taliban and al Qaeda leaders and other terrorists in secure locations throughout that country.

In April 2004, soldiers from the 1st Cavalry Division were on a routine patrol in Sadr City, Iraq, when they came under surprise attack. Eight Americans would be killed and more than 70 wounded. Back home, as news of the attack began filtering in, the families of these same men feared the worst. This intimate portrait of the close-knit community of families Stateside, the unsung heroes of the military, distinguishes The Long Road Home from other stories of modern warfare.

Retired Marine sniper Jack Coughlin and John Bruning pull back the curtain of secrecy to take an insider's look at the dark and misunderstood world of America's sniper force. Long considered the redheaded stepchildren of the infantry, snipers have been loathed by their fellow warriors, called "ten cent killers" by our media, and portrayed as unbalanced psychopaths by Hollywood.

Writer doesn't know Beans from Bacon
Raging gunfights with M-2 machine guns hundreds of rounds spent in continuous fire. No barrel changing, spare bbls and no regard for 100 round limit to ammo cans. Just one example of glaring ommisions.

Thriller! Amazing story line.
Stan R. Mitchell has been very impressive. He is also very open and responds and will have conversations with you via his website. Afghan Storm got your attention right away and held it throughout the book. There is action and very good detail, as you listen or read you can picture the scenes as if you were in a movie. Lookout the Nick Woods series is on a rise. I can't wait to see what he come out with next.
Also Jay Snyder crushes it again. One of the best in the business.

crazy heroes disobey orders to do the right thing
It's hard enough to stay alive when the enemy with guns is in front of you, and even harder when there's an enemy behind with political punch. It tells a story of leaders less interested in winning a war than retaining their political positions in comfort back home.
The story does drag a bit in places, especially when they have to hike all over Afghanistan carrying close to 100 pounds of gear and water and ammo. They do make use of what they can find to confiscate, and it's a good thing since there is no backup ready or waiting. There is lots of killing in various ways, some clever and cheer-worthy, some not so. The scenes are very vivid, though, so you can see what is happening.
There's a charismatic religious leader and his more practical lieutenant, but in the end we are left with a question as to why the leader didn't feel his subordinate's argument to delay an attack was justifiable.
There's a new female soldier, and a terrible loss. I guess that has to happen to make the story realistic, but I don't like it, no indeed.
Now Nick Woods is left with even more demons to battle, and yet even he knows that all he is good for is war. And the story ends with Nick wondering who at home is not on his side.
The narration is great. So, a thoroughly good listen. Please click Yes below if my review helped you choose to listen or avoid this book, and since that is where I derive my self-esteem!

Great Read!
I enjoyed listening to this fast-paced, military thriller. The novel is full of action and characters who face impossible odds. Mitchell draws on his background in the Marine Corps to keep it real.

Hoooorah!
Really entertaining. I woke up several times over the last few days around 4 AM actually looking forward to listening for a couple of hours before getting up and going to work. I think he has a jack reacher type series here. The lead character is a little younger, a little less sane very smart but sometimes undone by his own emotions. Just a roller coaster ride every time you open one of these books. Fans of reacher, grey man man and victor the assassin swill love these.

I thought this book would be okay, but once I got started it seemed fast paced from the beginning. I now have to go back and listen to the second book, because I intentionally skipped it.
