About this listen

A rediscovered classic and international best seller that recounts the gripping tale of a friendship destroyed at the hands of Nazi Germany

In this searing novel, Kathrine Kressmann Taylor brings vividly to life the insidious spread of Nazism through a series of letters between Max, a Jewish art dealer in San Francisco, and Martin, his friend and former business partner who has returned to Germany in 1932, just as Hitler is coming to power.

Originally published in Story magazine in 1938, Address Unknown became an international sensation. Credited with exposing the dangers of Nazism to American readers early on, it is also a scathing indictment of fascist movements around the world and a harrowing exposé of the power of the pen as a weapon.

A powerful and eloquent tale about the consequences of a friendship - and society - poisoned by extremism, Address Unknown remains hauntingly and painfully relevant today.

I read an article that mentioned this book. I had no idea of the impact it would have on me and should have on everyone living in the US today. This should be required reading for all high school students. Julie B

Amazing novel, every American should read it immediately

At first I was excited, then angry, then almost cried. I had to take a break when they were laughing and joking about scamming people. Then started again to think, “NO WAY”! Then my heart fell more and more and almost to tears. I have 14 minutes left and can to write this. It’s heavy in a good way. Everyone should read this. Makes me be more grateful for the things I do have. Wow… such an amazingly put together audio book

I have went there so many emotions

Factual in concept

The sounds of pages turning between chapters drives home that these are actual letters between one time friends. Fascinating and terrifying how best friends can be brainwashed and turned against each other. It reinforces what must be human nature: as long as something doesn't affect us negatively we'll stand by and watch atrocities happen. We'll let groups of people become scapegoats for everything wrong in the world. Less than a century later we are watching it all happen again. A history we never thought we'd allow to repeat itself is unfolding before us. Read/ listen to this book and take note of the signs.

Still relevant after almost a century

I want to go back and listen to the letter when Martin made the obvious shift and was explaining it to Max. ( Sounding a little like politics in the U.S. today!?). Max couldn't believe it was his old friend! There was the betrayal ("addressee unknown") and the later letters from Max were used as a weapon of revenge! (And then "address unknown!"). Very thought provoking, very short classic.

I want to go back and listen....What did he say?

Hate of the JewIsh people continues all over the world, for no other reason than their faith. It relates an important message and should be read by everyone.

Beware of your wishes!

However brief this is, much is shown about the rise of nazi germany and it's early years. A must read by all of those studying world history.

short but compelling

This is a short book but the point behind it is timeless. We should never forget.

An amazing story

This is such a powerful story. Be sure to pay attention to the prologue and epilogue - they both have fascinating information in them. Yes, you’ll wonder what’s going on for a bit in the story line, but it becomes so clear. It’s cleverly and masterfully written!
