Acerca de esta escucha

A humorous collection of autobiographical essays from comedian and Somebody Somewhere actor Jeff Hiller, who shares his journey from growing up “profoundly gay” in 1980s Texas to his experiences as an inept social worker and how he clawed, scraped, and brawled to Hollywood’s lower middle-tier.

While struggling to find success as an actor and pay the bills, something accidentally happened to Jeff Hiller: he aged. And while it’s one thing to get older and rest on the laurels of success from the blood, sweat, and tears of your youth, it’s quite another to be old and have no laurels. At forty, stuck in a temp job making spreadsheets, the dream of becoming a star seemed out of reach. But after twenty-five years of guest roles on TV and performing improv in a grocery store basement, he finally struck gold with a breakout role on HBO’s Somebody Somewhere, playing Joel—the kind of best friend everyone wishes they had.

In his book, Jeff dives into the grit and grind of climbing the Hollywood ladder. It’s a raw and often hilarious tale of the struggles, triumphs, and humiliations that shaped him into the wonderfully imperfect person he is today. With a mix of awkward charm and heartfelt honesty, Jeff shares his journey: growing up very Lutheran in Texas, navigating bullying as a gay kid, working as a social worker for unhoused youth and HIV prevention, and the endless ups and downs of being a struggling actor. For every one of us who have a dream that we’re chasing—and chasing, and chasing—his is a funny, moving, and utterly relatable story.

I was introduced to Jeff in his HBO show, Somebody, Somewhere. I fell in love with his character and longed to be a member of the friend group portrayed on the show. Hearing his story and being able to hear his giggle again was a treat. I love the way he read his story as well. His perseverance in his career is an inspiration to all! I love to see someone who refuses to quit, get their day in the spotlight and I wish him continued success! Love you Jeff!

I love Jeff Hiller! Entertaining and gave me all the feels

This was great. I don’t know Jeff or his work (sorry! Will fix!) but I picked this at the recommendation of friends and it was so good. It’s a balm of gratitude for a now-middle-aged life lived with authenticity and with perspective and humor. Great listen!

Attitude is gratitude!

This isn’t my usual genre. Far from it. My library is filled with dystopian sci fi, zombies doing zombie things, and the Murderbot Diaries, before that handsome Swedish actor even knew there’d be a made for t.v. series.

No, biography is not my thing…But I adored “Somebody Somewhere” (total girl-crush on Bridget Everett) who was brilliant in asking her pal, one Mr. Jeff Hiller, to play her most fabulous gay BFF on the (very sadly) short series run. Jeff was absolutely perfect as Joel in. Perfect in the way that you don’t actually learn the actors name because they are that character. You know, like Bryan Cranston…absolutely brilliant and not many people know his real name. Look up his IMDB, you’ll be amazed and impressed. Unlike Tom Cruise, who makes some really entertaining action movies, never once lets you forget that it’s a Tom Cruise movie.

Then the other night I hear Desi Lydic introducing her guest on the Daily Show and, to my heart fluttering surprise, out walks Joel, Sam’s gay BFF! The interview was hilariously heartfelt and (directly to Jeff) I was intrigued when I saw you clutch your book to your chest like the precious pearl it is; I know your name now, Mr. Man.

For those who might shy away from this book because the author reads it…don’t. My audio library is littered with unfinished listens because the narrator needs to find another occupation; I know a good audio narrator when I hear them (RC Bray, I’m looking at you, big guy). Listening to Jeff’s book (x1.25 speed) is like hanging out on a summer day hearing one of your funniest friends tell you stories about their life. At 1.25 speed, assume it’s a highly caffeinated funny friend.

There’s no reason not to listen, unless you dislike laughing or learning a little more about that actor who is good enough to let you forget they are not the character you know them by.

Must listen hilariousness

Jeff narrates his book with comedy, wit, & charm. I related to many of the stories about his life. I’m a huge fan of his work and this book is no different. 10/10 must read.

Jeff is amazing! As a fellow San Antonio native with a older husband and a love for show this was perfect! I love the story, comedy and truth that Jeff brings. I will always be extremely thankful for this memoir as it made me feel seen and heard in a way that is rare in life. I hope to someday meet Jeff and tell him how much he is loved and how he brings joy to everything he does. If you have a heart then listen to this book, it will bring you joy in a way you didnt expect by someone you will surely love.

P.S. I almost died near the end of laughter when there is a story about a proctologist doing an exam over zoom. OMG you HAVE TO HEAR IT! YOU WILL JUST FALL OVER OF LAUGHTER!

What a listen!

The author's sense of the absurd makes this a must-listen, especially if you love David Sedaris.
