About this listen

A delightful romantic comedy featuring a Muslim woman who fakes an engagement to the boy next door in the hopes of winning a couples cooking contest.

When it comes to bread, Reena Manji knows exactly what she's doing. She treats her sourdough starters like (somewhat unruly) children. But when it comes to Reena's actual family - and their constant meddling in her life - well, that recipe always ends in disaster.

Now Reena's parents have found her yet another potential Good Muslim Husband. This one has the body of Captain America, a delicious British accent, and lives right across the hall. He's the perfect, mouthwatering temptation...and completely ruined by the unwelcome side dish of parental interference.

Reena refuses to marry anyone who works for her father. She won't be attracted to Nadim's sweet charm or gorgeous lopsided smile. That is, until the baking opportunity of a lifetime presents itself: a couples' cooking competition with the prize of her dreams. Reena will do anything to win - even asking Nadim to pretend they're engaged. But when it comes to love, baking your bread doesn't always mean you get to eat it too.

Like a Hallmark movie

If you’re looking for an easy read that doesn’t tax your mind in anyway this book is for you. It reminded me of a Hallmark movie that was long and drawn out. Very predictable.

Accidentally engaged

Pretty good. I guess it depends on what you like. I liked the cooking plot twists. That was unique.

Charming, Engaging Story!

I really enjoyed “Accidentally Engaged.” I listened to it on Audible, and lost many hours of sleep when I found it hard to stop listening to the story!
I enjoyed that it exposed me to a different culture (transplanted Indian Muslims) living in Canada.
It has a very satisfying conclusion, and I almost wish that actually existed. I want to go to Toronto and eat at their restaurant and get them to autograph the cook book; but alas, it was fiction!

Brilliantly unexpected!

I bought this book expecting it to be a fun summer read, but it turned out to be so much more. The characters are clever and engaging and the dialogue is sharp and poignant. Soneela Nankani does an excellent job reading multiple characters and giving each it's own personality.
This is an excellent read, but be ready for the insatiable need to bake bread.

Loved it!

This book made me remember how much I love baking. There was so much amazing detail about actual bread baking technique, told in such a warm and charming way that I immediately got out my supplies and started re-learning bread baking! The story is warm and delightful and wonderful. I wanted it to go on forever.

Well written and narrated

This book was both entertaining and engaging. Main character of Reena is very lovable and relatable to. Indian cooking is not something I am familiar with but now am going to seek out my first Indian restaurant and try it! I really enjoyed the cooking show fake engagement, it really seemed to have allowed Nazim to sort of fall into the person he wants to be while pretending to "fake it''. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a little romantic comedy now and then.

Loved it!

This is my first book by this author and I was so impressed with how witty and funny this romcom was!!! The heroine was super relatable and the hero was irresistibly charming. I loved the diverse intersectionalities of their backgrounds. They were both East African Indians and he had this sexy English accent due to going to private schools in England. I've never read Asian narratives where their "home" country wasn't in the country of their true heritage so that was cool and different!

Nadim was one of my favorite heroes in 2021. And Reena was so darn hilarious with the bread naming. At first I thought she was talking about animals but this woman named HER BREAD! How funny is that? The two had great chemistry and fake engagement is my fave so I loved seeing that play out.

I think the only thing that disappointed me was the lack of steamy love scenes. They were very much fade to black and I need my sexy times on the steamy-erotic side! I mean why give the man a foot fetish if you weren't going to do anything interesting with it >:) It was a waste of a kink! And oh considering both characters were both Muslim, I was slightly uncomfortable with all the drinking they did. I'm not sure I'd call this a true Muslim romance since people of the faith I'm sure were uncomfortable with that too. I know Muslims are not a monolith but sometimes I thought it was doing too much to show how un-Muslim and western they could be.

Overall, I did love it! I look forward to her next romance!

Fun story

First I’ve read by this author. While there seemed easy solutions by simply communicating, the humor of the story revolves around the secrets and discovery of said secrets. Definitely a fun story.

Loved the story but honestly I had to fast forward to the incessant whining of the main character

Charmed and Engaged

I really enjoyed this book about Reena, Nadim, a cooking competition, and a chance to turn obstacles into opportunities. Reena turns an obstacle (getting laid off again) into an opportunity to pursue her dreams while Nadim moves past previous mistakes and gets the job and life he wants. This story made me smile and want to celebrate along with Reena, Nadim, their family, and their friends. This was a good book to get lost in.
