Londra 1837 - Abilene Fairfax è abituata a dare scandalo al Ton e non si cura delle chiacchiere e alle maldicenze che la seguono da quando ha sposato il vecchio Conte di Stonefield.

Il bambino con un enorme sforzo mise i gomiti sul tavolo, cosa che Mrs Connor gli rimproverava regolarmente, poi si sporse in avanti e, con il tono che riservava alle cose segrete, provò a chiarire la propria idea: "Mi piace molto. Più in là vorrei sposarne una così, uguale identica."
Arthur non trovò la cosa divertente, quindi suo figlio si sentì in dovere di essere più preciso:
"Bella come le giornate senza pioggia e che rida. Avete notato com'era bella quando rideva?" chiarì Samuel.
Lady Stonefield non rideva mai.
E non aveva niente a che fare con i giorni in cui non pioveva.
In realtà era intrinsecamente uggiosa.
Assomigliava a quelle giornate tormentate dalle mosche, ai pomeriggi in cui non si riesce a concentrarsi su niente perché quegli insetti maledetti ti ronzano nelle orecchie senza tregua, occupano i tuoi pensieri, fendono la tua aria, attirano la tua attenzione."
