Publisher's summary
In 1884, with a job offer to become City Editor of the Los Angeles Times, Charles Fletcher Lummis determined to walk to his new job from Ohio, covering over 3,500 miles through 8 states and territories. He witnessed and documented the end of the old American West and the beginning of the modern age, which picked new winners and losers. Adventurous author, passionate Indian rights activist, pioneering reporter, workaholic newspaper editor, librarian, poet, anthropologist and archeologist, Charles Fletcher Lummis was a great colorful individualist, who explored and popularized the facts and legends of the American Southwest.
In this first person narrative, never before recorded as an audio book, Lummis describes the invasion of the West by investors, forcing out small miners and ranchers. He sees the last of the buffalo, is nearly murdered by prisoners, visits the Southwest Indian pueblos before there were highways, befriends a dog who goes mad, performs self surgery while alone in the wild, is nearly frozen in a blizzard and meets the great colorful characters of the American West.

Story
In this classic from the Lone Star State, John Graves learns that the river he knew and loved as a youth, the Brazos in north-central Texas, is slated to be dammed at multiple points - and he understands that things will never be the same. Goodbye to a River is a poignant narrative of one man's journey by canoe down the river of his memories. Along the way, he describes the colorful Texas landscape and recounts its rich history.

Story
Thoreau gives an account of three canoe and hiking journeys - by himself and with others - through the mostly uninhabited forests of Maine in the 1850s. Identifying birds, trees and plants by their botanical as well as their common names, he also records the Indian names of lakes, rivers and plants. He investigates the connections between waterways and trails, and provides detail on camping, fishing and hunting in the woods, using whatever is at hand. Extolling the beauty of the wilds that he encounters, Thorough’s narrative is also imbued with elements of his philosophy.

Story
In 1963 Colin Fletcher became the first man to walk the length of Grand canyon, below the Rim. It began with a dream, when he and a friend detoured from a cross-country trip to take a hurried look at the great natural wonder. Standing on the Rim, surrounded by the profound and almost mystical silence, Fletcher knew that something had happened to the way he looked at things. He also knew that the Canyon, with its depths and distances, cliffs, buttes, and hanging terraces, beckoned to him, calling him on a journey that would challenge both his body and his mind.

Francis Parkman's journal - written more than 150 years ago, in 1846 - provides an eye-witness account of one of the grandest adventures in American history. At age 23, the Harvard-educated Bostonian traveled the Rocky Mountains, living among the Dakota Sioux. In his journal, he captured the color, spirit, and perspective of his era, as well as the exuberant confidence that was the mark of his time. Frank Muller's dramatic reading brings this captivating record to life.

What a Trek. What a Tramp.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this audiobooks to friends who live in the Southwest. Lummis' descriptions riveted me because I have driven through or flown over this region without knowing its history. Lummis' trek across the continent is an adventure unlike anything I have read before.
Who was your favorite character and why?
My favorite character was Lummis himself. He wrote during his journey. He took chances which many of us would not have taken. He was in the right place at the right time to see people, places, and customs before they changed in the twentieth century. He was a great promoter of the Southwest and the Native Americans who lived there. Although he passed away nearly a century ago, I feel like I am sitting by his fire as he tells be his tales.
