Rose is the youngest of seven children, meant to replace her dead sister. Maybe because of that, she’s never really fit in. She’s always felt different, out of place, a restless wanderer in a family of homebodies. So when an enormous white bear mysteriously shows up and asks her to come away with him - in exchange for health and prosperity for her ailing family - she readily agrees. Rose travels on the bear’s broad back to a distant and empty castle, where she is nightly joined by a mysterious stranger.

Step into a world of visions, philosophy, and passion in which dreamers, seekers, princesses, and wandering poets dwell. The 6 wonderful, romantic tales in this collection are reminiscent of ancient Oriental and German fairy tales. The selections, "The Poet," "The Flute Dream," "The Dwarf," "Faldum," "Ziegler," and "Dream of the Gods" were hand-picked by the narrator, legendary folk and rock musician Donovan.

The Silver Bullet...
What did you love best about A Thicket of Tales: Volume 2?
The first one was so good that I bought the second one halfway through our road trip. No matter how cranky my kiddos were, there was peace (and dare I say actual happiness?) the minute that I hit play on these stories. My husband started calling it "the silver bullet" about 2 hours in... These are going to have a permanent spot in our cars and at home, too. Might have to break down and get the CD, too...
What other book might you compare A Thicket of Tales: Volume 2 to and why?
Each of these stories are really different from one another, so I'm not sure what I'd compare it to. I guess maybe I'd compare it to Grimm's Fairy Tales because of the adventure, imagery, ad vocabulary, but with some softened edges! (No scary witches here, just characters you can root for who are really good role models.)
Which scene was your favorite?
I'd have to say that my favorite scene was in The Good Son, when Jack is fleeing, overcoming obstacles all the way... (Don't want to give t away!) Definitely a lot of excitement, and my kids actually clapped at the end. Does it get better than that?
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Ummm...yeah. We listened to the whole thing, including the last ten minutes in front of a restaurant when the kids didn't want to get out of the car until they heard how it ended! (I have to admit, it didn't take too much convincing. We were pretty into it, too.)
Any additional comments?
This series is AWESOME. Works for lots of ages, boys and girls, and you can actually feel GOOD about turning it on. It's amazing to me that we have so much kid stuff at home and I always felt like I was trying to find the least objectionable option. Bonus? My kids actually remembered what they heard, asked what words meant, and talked about things they learned.

FANTASTIC new addition to the series...
Would you consider the audio edition of A Thicket of Tales: Volume 2 to be better than the print version?
Well, I think that this started as an audiobook, so yes, I don't know if there is even a print book.
What other book might you compare A Thicket of Tales: Volume 2 to and why?
Kind of like the classic Disney stories - beautifully written, no "modern twists," things that you'll feel great about your kids hearing, and won't get outdated because they're not set in a modern time period. Plus, they all teach a lesson (but not in an in-you-face way),which made me really happy.
What about A.D. Hasselbring’s performance did you like?
It was really pleasant audio to listen to - it's something my wife and I enjoy having on rather than something we tolerate.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I don't know if we did, but the kids did - there was clapping, cheering, and genuine concern for the characters.
Any additional comments?
I was totally sold after the first volume. I'll be following this from now on, and already bought these for our nieces and nephews.
