Publisher's summary

From New York Times best-selling author Jennifer A. Nielsen comes a stunning thriller about a girl who must escape to freedom after the Berlin Wall divides her family between east and west. With the rise of the Berlin Wall, 12-year-old Gerta finds her family divided overnight. She, her mother, and her brother, Fritz, live on the eastern side, controlled by the Soviets. Her father and middle brother, who had gone west in search of work, cannot return home. Gerta knows it is dangerous to watch the wall, to think forbidden thoughts of freedom, yet she can't help herself.

She sees the East German soldiers with their guns trained on their own citizens; she, her family, her neighbors, and her friends are prisoners in their own city. But one day, while on her way to school, Gerta spots her father on a viewing platform on the western side, pantomiming a peculiar dance.

Then, when she receives a mysterious drawing, Gerta puts two and two together and concludes that her father wants Gerta and Fritz to tunnel beneath the wall, out of East Berlin. However, if they are caught, the consequences will be deadly. No one can be trusted. Will Gerta and her family find their way to freedom?

Excellent Reminder of the Importance of Freedom

Jennifer A. Nielsen is an excellent writer who brings her characters to life! She gives such detail to make the reader feel invested in the story. I became so anxious about the main character's plight that one night I could barely fall asleep after listening to the story. This story gave me a whole new understanding of what happened to East Germany after the wall went up.

My daughter and I listened together

What made the experience of listening to A Night Divided the most enjoyable?

Listening to it with my 10 year old and pausing to discuss what was happening in the world then. And especially how she could relate to being close to being the same age.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, because it was emotionally draining. Then tension - the ugliness that was happening in the world. But still compelling to want to finish.

On the edge of our seats

My kids (11 and 12) and I loved this book! We were on the edge of our seats the whole time and they learned an important history lesson about the Cold War. A great read!

Really good book

I had to choose a book for a book report for school and is book looked really interesting took a long time to read but certainly worth it. I hope more people would read this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes slow starting nonfiction history "action" (e action doesn't come in the beggining toward the middle and the end) thankyou for reading my review

Good storyline

Any additional comments?

When I started listening, and realized this story is written from a young girls perspective, I almost gave up on it, I'm so glad I didn't. The 1st chapter is really slow but into the 2nd chapter the tension builds and keeps building right up until the story ends.
Narration was fine, because her voice was in keeping with a young girl.
All in all, the story was well written, interesting and compelling enough to keep the attentions of 2 mature people.

Every one over 10 should read this book

This was such a great book to listen to my 10 year old granddaughter was reading it. She said grandma you’ve got to read this, but I have enjoyed it very much. I hope she got out of it how controlling a fascist government is.
