About this listen

“Utterly captivating and beautifully written, this book is a hugely entertaining and enlightening exploration of a bird so wickedly smart, curious, and social, it boggles the mind.” (Jennifer Ackerman, author of The Bird Way)

A fascinating, entertaining, and totally engrossing story.” (David Sibley, author of What It's Like to Be a Bird)

An enthralling account of a modern voyage of discovery as we meet the clever, social birds of prey called caracaras, which puzzled Darwin, fascinate modern-day falconers, and carry secrets of our planet's deep past in their family history.

“As curious, wide-ranging, gregarious, and intelligent as its subject.” (Charles C. Mann, author of 1491)

In 1833, Charles Darwin was astonished by an animal he met in the Falkland Islands: handsome, social, and oddly crow-like falcons that were "tame and inquisitive...quarrelsome and passionate", and so insatiably curious that they stole hats, compasses, and other valuables from the crew of the Beagle. Darwin wondered why these birds were confined to remote islands at the tip of South America, sensing a larger story, but he set this mystery aside and never returned to it.

Almost two hundred years later, Jonathan Meiburg takes up this chase. He takes us through South America, from the fog-bound coasts of Tierra del Fuego to the tropical forests of Guyana, in search of these birds: striated caracaras, which still exist, though they're very rare. He reveals the wild, fascinating story of their history, origins, and possible futures. And along the way, he draws us into the life and work of William Henry Hudson, the Victorian writer and naturalist who championed caracaras as an unsung wonder of the natural world, and to falconry parks in the English countryside, where captive caracaras perform incredible feats of memory and problem-solving. A Most Remarkable Creature is a hybrid of science writing, travelogue, and biography, as generous and accessible as it is sophisticated, and absolutely riveting.

Critic reviews

One of NPR's Best Books of the Year

“A fascinating, entertaining, and totally engrossing story of these under-appreciated birds, deftly intertwining natural history and human history, and with insights and lessons that go far beyond the subject birds.” (David Sibley, author of What It's Like to Be a Bird)

“Caracaras are not like other birds, or even other birds of prey. Curious, wide-ranging, gregarious, and intelligent, the ten species of caracara are a scientific puzzle that has intrigued biologists since the days of Darwin. And this book - as curious, wide-ranging, gregarious, and intelligent as its subject - is not like any other book that I have encountered. A Most Remarkable Creature is not only about a bird, but about the community of people that has formed, almost accidentally, around the bird, and beyond that about humankind itself.” (Charles C. Mann, author of 1491)

"If caracaras were able to read - and immersing myself in Mr. Meiburg’s vivid prose I sometimes fancied they just might be - this book would give them a lot of information about that exceptional creature named Jonathan Meiburg.” (Christoph Irmscher, Wall Street Journal)

A fresh Prespective

Loved hearing this authors take on wildlife. less sterile then most scientific works. He places the survival of other species on the cusp of extinction in our hands.

“The hardest work is seeing the natural world”

The book makes you longing for not only the “idleness” to “see” the natural world but also the long-lost peace in one’s heart to do so. I have been to most of the places different species of caracaras have made home. Only now after listening to the book, can I begin to appreciate them below the skin.

Great Listen

This bood not only introduced me to a caracaras, a bird species I previously knew nothing about, but also put them in perspective with falcons, hawks, eagles and other raptors. The author vividly described his travels, various bird species, and how bird and animal species survived and migrated over time. I very much liked all the deep perspectives.

I liked the author's delivery -- his enthusiasm and deep devotion to the topic was evident throughout. I also noticed the author is a musician and he composed the music that played in the background during some passages.

What an absolute treasure!

I totally adore this book. The way in which the author communicates the details of each and every situation that he describes had me fully engrossed in the scene, feeling as if I was actually there. With all of the birds that he introduced I came away with the experience of having actually gotten to know them, individually. The caracara have to be one of the most personable flying critters on this planet, as well as one of the most intelligent. It's humbling to know that there are people who have actually committed themselves, their lives, energies, and time to getting to know these beautiful animals up close - and to sharing their experiences with us so that our lives might be fuller with the knowledge that such wonderful beings exist, even though we may never see one or hear one in our time on earth. This is a great book to serve as a reminder that there is so much more to this magnificent planet than oil fields, lithium mines, and shopping malls. Thank you Jonathan Meiberg.

written with beauty, artfulness and sensitivity

I downloaded this book for the quality of its prose, knowing and caring nothing about the caracara bird. I come away agreeing that it is, indeed, a most remarkable creature, worthy of the attention, intelligence and care lavished on it in this book.

Engaging Natural History

Well written and well paced. Highly engaging and wide-ranging history of South American nature. I could wish for more about marsupials, even though they’re off-topic for this work.

I’m glad this is an audiobook; sometimes natural history is too slow to keep my attention. I did need to speed it up to 1.1x due to the narrator’s habit of pausing between clauses. I got used to it quickly (as one does).

Overall I recommend this book for anyone interested in nature, birds, and natural history.

A Most Remarkable Book

Fantastic stories that span geological time and space,
animal and human natural history and culture, and the people who have become entranced by it all. Well narrated, especially the bird sounds. Seems like I have a little traveling to do.

Fascinating combination of history, storytelling, and information about the extraordinary Caracara birds.

At first, I was nervous to see that the author had read the book, but he had a very charming and unassuming way about him. The many stories and experiences relayed in this book of fascinating and extraordinary examples of the world around us.
