About this listen

From National Book Award finalist Susan Straight comes a haunting historical novel about a Louisiana slave girl's perilous journey to freedom.

Daughter of an African mother and a white father she never knew, Moinette is a house maid on a plantation south of New Orleans. At fourteen she is sold, separated from her mother without a chance to say goodbye.

Bright, imaginative and well aware of everything she risks, Moinette at once begins to prepare for an opportunity to escape. Inspired by a true story, A Million Nightingales portrays Moinette’s experience - and the treacherous world she must navigate - with uncommon richness, intricacy, and drama.

The story was a great depiction of what it was to be a young female house slave. You could visualize what New Orleans was like during the early 1800’s. However in spite of advantages Moinette had over other slaves, she was constantly attacked and abused. That was hard to read. The male slaves were disloyal and useless even after being given freedom. That seemed stereotypical. There were no beautiful Black women in the story and Moinette’s beauty came from her white father. Also stereotypical.

Good depiction of timeperiod

I love this book! Robin Miles brought the Louisiana Bayou to life. I only wish they had given the French Creole definitions at the beginning of the book. This book is a must listen !
