About this listen

How much would you gamble for love? Rufus Lovell has been thrust unexpectedly into riches and gained a new set of friends who delight in wagers and bets, with nothing too small or too big to gamble on - even marriage.

So when a tipsy party joke becomes a wager on Rufus' marriage, he knows he should said no.

But Juliana Honeyfield, the unwitting and unknowing focus of the gamble, is not the simple and malleable young woman that Rufus' friends take her for.

She demands a lot more from her acquaintances, and the challenge of understanding this intriguing woman and keeping the truth of the wager from her starts to wear thin on Rufus.

Especially when his belief in marriage has already been so greatly rocked and his family history is sunk in crime, alcoholism, and prison.

Will it be possible for Rufus to charm the winning Juliana?

Does he owe her the truth about his initial interest in her?

And who will eventually win the Michaelmas wager?

A Michaelmas Wager is a charming Regency romance novella about the unlikely consequences of spur of the moment decisions.

A fool's wager

A wager to have a wife by Christmas and an annulment afterward without the woman knowing. But what happens when you actually fall in love and the lady finds out about the wager? I received a complimentary audio and this review is voluntary.

A wager that might turn into love.

Love the narrator's voice. I felt like I was there. Rufus makes a wager to wed and win a bet. Little does he know Juliana isn't a wilting flower. She had so much spunk. When they fall in love what is Rufus willing to lose to win?

The Stupidity of Man

The wager was stupid but Rufus fell for Juliana. Their story is well written and the readers reading was heartfelt.

An enjoyable tale

This was an entertaining story concerning the perils of young men wagering. Rufus Lovell has accepted a wager concerning Julianna Honeyfield. Rufus is attempting to live down a family scandal and trying to make new friends. Julianna, a vicar’s daughter, is not a typical miss and often says what she is thinking. A refreshing change. During the course of the story Rufus makes some important discoveries about himself and his friends. I did enjoy this story and Virginia Ferguson did make the characters come to life. This is a sweet romance and a good length for occasions when time is limited.

Emily Murdoch has a talent for easy reading, read by Virginia Ferguson. I enjoyed Julianna's charictor and how well it blended with Ruffus in this twist of a wager. One never knows how somthing can change from what is planned! Thank you for this listen I did enjoy this experience.

Travel to regency London with this delightful tale

Emily's stories really do transport you to London in a time of strict social mores for women and roguish games by men. Most marriages were arranged by the families for advantage (wealth, power and position) but rarely for love. Not surprisingly, few men took their role as suitor or husband seriously. Rufus is running with friends who do not take life seriously and gets caught up in a foolish, drunken wager. His opinion of married life, influenced by his unloving parents, was not very encouraging so he did not take much care in seeking a wife. But he did not count on Juliana. She was very different. And he did not count on falling in love with her fresh ideas and outspoken tongue. But has he already ruined his chances with Juliana with his stupid wager to marry her by Michaelmas? The book is witty and clever and builds up a nice tension and angst as the romance develops. In 3 hours, just right for a beach read, you will fall in love with them and be transported to another world. The tale also introduces the characters for the 4 seasonal novellas to follow.

Fabulous!

This was a delightful book which was well narrated.
The plot was interesting as Rufus agreed to the terms of a wager involving marriage and Julianna's heart. An unsuspecting Julianna is kind, loving and sweet.
I enjoyed the pace of the story and each of the characters, including those that were secondary in the story. The narrator did a fine job distinguishing between the characters.
I have read several of Ms. Murdoch's books. I look forward to now listening to them as it brings the books to life.
