About this listen

It's no rest for the wicked when Kate Shackleton picks up her second professional sleuthing case. But exposing the culprit of a pawn-shop robbery turns sinister when her investigation takes her to the wealthy neighborhoods of Harrogate - and murder is only one step behind. A night at the theater should have been just what the doctor ordered, until Kate stumbles across a body in the doorway. The knife sticking out of its chest definitely suggests a killer in the theater's midst.

Kate likes nothing better than a mystery - except solving it. So when a ransom note demands GBP 1,000 for the safe return of the play's leading lady, Kate must piece together clues - and lure criminals out of their lairs.

If I could only get past that VOICE!

How could the performance have been better?

I had so looked forward to this second book in the series. The narrator for Dying in the Wool had a quickness to her speech with such natural modulation that I could almost "hear" the smile in her voice when something was humorous. Not so in this book! The narrator sloooowwwly murmurs her words with hardly any change in tone. I have listened to only an hour and I can hardly distinguish when she changes from one character to another. She sounds like she is reciting sentences rather than giving any emotional quality to her "performance." I have belonged to Audible since the beginning and this might be the ONLY book I ever gave up on!

Any additional comments?

Please make sure you listen to the sample before you spend money on this book. Maybe if I had done so I would not be stuck with something I dread trying to finish!

Lots of characters, lots of story lines.

There are many characters in this story but you can keep up without being lost. Author ties it all together in the end. I like the internal conflicts that the characters wrestle with when doing the right thing causes more harm. The arguments very well presented.

A Medal for Murder

I'm enjoying this series immensely and hope that the several books not available on audible will find a narrator and be available to the fans of Frances Brody and Kate Shackleton.
