About this listen

Mary André, sister to a prominent British officer, flees a despairing argument with her brother and loses her way, ending up in the enemy camp just as the American Revolution takes hold. Now Mary must make a powerful decision - to become a member of George Washington's ring of spies or risk being discovered as the enemy.

Mary's choice will affect the outcome of the war, as well as unleash a series of consequences in her own life that she can't escape: will she risk her own brother's life to save thousands of revolutionary soldiers? Could she turn the course of the war in the revolution's favor? Will she be able to face the consequences of falling in love?

A Lady

Narrator is excellent! I look forward to more books narrated by her. There were several missing pauses between sentences that led to some confusion in understanding what was being communicated, and several repeated words/phrases; so be aware there are several production glitches. But this does not change anything about the excellent was of the narrator and author.
Author is also excellent; I look forward to more books by her as well. Unfortunately this book reads like it was written by a high schooler dreaming of romance, and I found the historical context included to be excellent (where it was included) but very minimal. This book reads more as a fantasy romance with a bit of history than as a historical fiction that includes romance.
I would have loved more details about setting, thoughts and feelings - and was disappointed to find the storyline jumping around constantly between scenes that didn’t feel fulfilled or finished. It is wonderful that the author understood and had a vision for what was happening behind the scenes of the story; however those are largely lacking in the physical story. I would love to see more of those included in future books. Many terms and scenes needed more detail to be understood fully.
I also found myself grappling with how realistic many things in this book were - the main characters decisions and thoughts, the romance, etc. The inclusion of a few graphic adult type terms (talk of virginity, talk of wanting each other, etc) seemed out of place and unrelated to the general theme of the purity of character driving the choices of the heroine. Sneaking around at night with the man she was in love with seemed so out of character with the way she was presented in the beginning, talking of the women of the night as “the kind of women one did not wish to know”. Again, very much like a dreamy high schoolers perspective.
I could definitely see the authors passion and love and dreams through the main character - and I do hope the author has found the kind of beautiful, dreamy romance that she created for her heroine in this story.
There were short sections of this book that were beautifully and descriptively written, too - and I was disappointed when they ended and went toward more elementary writing and description of the scenes, such as romance that wasn’t as believable.
There were a lot of comments about mouths, noses, and jaws - the same adjectives were repeated - “strong, square, full”…. I was perplexed by the description of a kiss to an “strong cheek”, and I think maybe these wouldn’t have stood out so much if there were more details in between these interactions. There are a few sections with great detail and these were excellent - I would love for that kind detail to be more prominent with other parts of the book that the author clearly understood but that as a reader, I did not understand.
All that said, I couldn’t stop listening and had to finish the book to see what would happen with the characters. I got attached to them! Looking forward to more from this author.

Beautiful Story

The creatively disruptive writing made it so easy to be sucked into the story. Very enjoyable read/listen.
