About this listen

For attorney Mick McFarland, the evidence is damning. And so are the family secrets in this twisty legal thriller from the Amazon Charts bestselling author of A Criminal Defense.

When crime lord Jimmy Nunzio is caught, knife in hand, over the body of his daughter’s lover and his own archenemy, he turns to Mick McFarland to take up his defense. Usually the courtroom puppeteer, McFarland quickly finds himself at the end of Nunzio’s strings. Struggling to find grounds for a not-guilty verdict on behalf of a well-known killer, Mick is hamstrung by Nunzio’s refusal to tell him what really happened.

On the other side of the law, Mick’s wife, Piper, is working to free Darlene Dowd, a young woman sentenced to life in prison for her abusive father’s violent death. But the jury that convicted Darlene heard only part of the truth, and Piper will do anything to reveal the rest and prove Darlene’s innocence.

As Mick finds himself in the middle of a mob war, Piper delves deeper into Darlene’s past. Both will discover dark secrets that link these fathers and daughters - some that protect, some that destroy, and some that can’t stay hidden forever. No matter the risk.

Well thought out

I enjoyed this book. Things were not overly predictable and it kept me interested until the last page.

decent story, few chapters longer than needed

If you decide to read this one, you will see what I mean....I don't want to give away too much, but the defendant running the defense got tiresome. I wasn't sure of the nessesity of the storyline with our main attorney's business partner. I could've done without that. The ending doesn't disappoint. I will say that. I dont know if there is a book 2 with this attorney and his family, but I probably would read it if there is.
Also, I liked the narrator; he does a fine job.

men can't do women

story was great but reader trying to do a female voice was just bad. really should invest in a woman to do the female voices.

Just a little slow moving

2 stories play out for this book. They are both well written but I felt the book moved slowly

The narration kills the story

I have never experienced such a funny narration of a book. The dreamy like voice sits well with a romance but in the mobster legal fiction, it is completely out of place. Especially, when the killers talk like my grandma, it makes me chuckle. The story is not great but it is different. All the people are doing so many ethical compromises that you can't like them. I haven't found any person who I can identify with, and you will not be able to decide who is good and who is bad. That makes the story interesting.

listened over several days surprises about things and characters. difficult to understand references to prior events in another book were referenced, but did not effect this story.

I wish I'd read the book

The story was good. I really enjoyed it. I couldn't stand the narrator, though. His tone and inflection were terrible. It would've been much better if he'd just read it instead of trying to act it out with "voices". Also xz whoever edited the audio did a horrible job splicing pieces together.

I sincerely hope the author uses someone else for editing and narrating future books.
