C. S. Lewis
About this listen
Written after his wife's tragic death as a way of surviving the "mad midnight moment", A Grief Observed is C.S. Lewis's honest reflection on the fundamental issues of life, death, and faith in the midst of loss. This work contains his concise, genuine reflections on that period: "Nothing will shake a man - or at any rate a man like me - out of his merely verbal thinking and his merely notional beliefs. He has to be knocked silly before he comes to his senses. Only torture will bring out the truth. Only under torture does he discover it himself." This is a beautiful and unflinchingly honest record of how even a stalwart believer can lose all sense of meaning in the universe, and how he can gradually regain his bearings.

C. S. Lewis's dazzling allegory about Heaven and Hell - and the chasm fixed between them - is one of his most brilliantly imaginative tales, where we discover that the gates of Hell are locked from the inside. In a dream, the narrator boards a bus on a drizzly afternoon in Hell and embarks on an incredible voyage to Heaven. Anyone in Hell is invited on board, and anyone may remain in Heaven if he or she so chooses. But do we really want to live in Heaven?

Story
Both astonishing and prophetic, The Abolition of Man remains one of C. S. Lewis's most controversial works. Lewis sets out to persuade his audience of the ongoing importance and relevance of universal objective values, such as courage and honor, and the foundational necessity of natural law. He also makes a cogent case that a retreat from these pillars of our educational system, even if in the name of "scientism", would be catastrophic. National Review lists it as number seven on their "100 Best Nonfiction Books of the 20th Century".

Set in the pre-Christian world of Glome on the outskirts of Greek civilization, it is a tale of two princesses: the beautiful Psyche, who is loved by the god of love himself, and Orual, Psyche's unattractive and embittered older sister, who loves Psyche with a destructive possessiveness. Her frustration and jealousy over Psyche's fate sets Orual on the troubled path of self-discovery. Lewis's last work of fiction, this is often considered his best by critics.

Story
A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C. S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging and humorous account of temptation - and triumph over it - ever written.

In the form of warm, relaxed letters to a close friend, C. S. Lewis meditates on many puzzling questions concerning the intimate dialogue between man and God. He considers practical and metaphysical aspects of prayer, such as when we pray and where. He questions why we seek to inform God in our prayers if he is omniscient, whether there is an ideal form of prayer, and which of our many selves we show to God while praying.

Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839-1908) was the greatest writer ever to come from Brazil and one of the masters of nineteenth-century fiction. Susan Sontag calls him "the greatest writer ever produced in Latin America", surpassing even Borges. Harold Bloom says that Machado is "the supreme black literary artist to date". And Allen Ginsburg calls him "another Kafka". And The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas is his masterpiece, a dazzling, tragic, and profound novel that belongs next to the greatest works of his contemporaries Melville and Dostoevsky.

This remarkable memoir is the classic account of the transgender journey. But all the while he was concealing a very different inner world: from the age of four he felt that, despite his body, he was really a girl.

Anais Nin wrote her diary at the end of 1931, at the close of a sexually tumultuous and emotional year as part of a ménage a trois with fellow writer Henry Miller and his beautiful wife June Mansfield. 'I really believe that if I were not a writer, not a creator, not an experimenter, I might have been a very faithful wife.' Nin's passionate and consuming relationship with Henry & June transformed a previously monogamous wife into an uninhibited and sexually liberated woman.

As we hear Ramsey tell his story, we begin to realize that, from childhood, he has influenced those around him in a perhaps mystical, perhaps pernicious way.

Story
Assembled from notes and jottings left unpublished at the time of the author’s death, The Book of Disquiet is a collection of aphoristic prose-poetry musings on dreams, solitude, time and memory. Credited to Pessoa’s alter ego, Bernardo Soares, who chronicles his contemplations in this so-called "factless" autobiography, the work is a journey of one man’s soul and, by extension, of all human souls that allow their minds and hearts to roam far and free.

This series of talks offers a deeper understanding of the underlying differences between Eastern and Western approaches to religion and the nature of consciousness.

Both astonishing and prophetic, The Abolition of Man remains one of C. S. Lewis's most controversial works. Lewis sets out to persuade his audience of the ongoing importance and relevance of universal objective values, such as courage and honor, and the foundational necessity of natural law. He also makes a cogent case that a retreat from these pillars of our educational system, even if in the name of "scientism", would be catastrophic.

Finding the Lord in Loss
One of the greatest questions to ever cross my mind is whether or not God, in his omniscience, allows pain. What would be it's purpose? C. S. Lewis's brief book speaks of the loss of his wife and how, though he asked God for the reasons behind such suffering, he did not lose his faith. In fact, his faith in the Lord was strengthened. I very much enjoyed a few sentences in his last chapter: "Heaven will solve our problems, but not, I think, by showing us subtle reconciliations between all our apparently contradictory notions. The notions will all be knocked from under our feet. We shall see that there never was any problem." God is in control, always. And, even if it takes loss to bring that revelation, thank you, Lord, for giving us the chance to open our eyes to Your Will and Love. Douglas Gresham wonderfully narrated C. S. Lewis's brilliant book!

A Grief Observed is one of C. S. Lewis’s most honest and vulnerable writings. Love how open he is with all the questions and challenges that death brings to us all. Highly recommend it to any who not only are looking for answers but solace in knowing someone so dedicated to God could be shaken yet still stand with great hope in the end.

Excellent Insights
I’ve recently read several books regarding grief since the death of a fiercely loved grandson. “A Grief Observed” has been the most helpful so far. Lewis, using his journal notes, takes the listener with him on his journey through grief, rebellion against God, and deep pain to a place of peace in the midst of pain. Definitely worth a listen or a read.

Refreshing
Though very short, I'm glad I bought it on audible. I have a feeling it is something I will listen to more than once. Though I have not lost as much as Lewis, nor feel as crushed as he is by his loss, I appreciated the honesty, sincerity, and eventual return to reason as I am accustomed to. Maybe what struck me most was his unafraid approach to question God as well as his own questioning of God. It seems strange to phrase it that way, but he looked closely at God as much as he looked at himself and his own feelings, fears, and prejudices. That he was brave enough to confront both himself and God... then publish the journey is amazing and a further testament to Christians and non-Christians. I was personally afraid what I would find in a book that doubted God. What I found was in actuality refreshing, encouraging, and educational for me and my faith. He's done it again for me - thanks Lewis!

Honest, transparent and a blessing to the reader
Experiencing deep grief revealed how much of my life I was lived with eyes wide shut. The #audible book a Grief Observed was a blessing to read. It was like being invited into the mind of great philosopher and theologian as he struggled to become whole or something nearer to it after losing his beloved wife. Instead of a methodical listing of feelings and well meaning platitudes. CS Lewis instead shows us how one can work through grief and be better for it with honesty, transparency and an enduring faith.

As a fan of Lewis this did not disappoint me. His writing is wonderful to listen to being read and Douglas Gresham does a very nice job. Lewis, after the death of his wife wrote on the subject of grief with great honesty and emotion. As with most of Lewis's books, I will be listening to it several times.
