About this listen

Power, privilege, and the rigid rules of class leave two hearts yearning for connection in the sizzling new Society of Gentlemen novel from K. J. Charles.

Among his eccentric though strictly principled group of friends, Lord Richard Vane is the confidant on whom everyone depends for advice, moral rectitude, and discreet assistance. Yet when Richard has a problem, he turns to his valet, a fixer of unparalleled genius - and the object of Richard's deepest desires. If there is one rule a gentleman must follow, it is never to dally with servants. But when David is close enough to touch, the rules of class collide with the basest sort of animal instinct: overpowering lust.

For David Cyprian, burglary and blackmail are as much in a day's work as bootblacking - anything for the man he's devoted to. But the one thing he wants for himself is the one thing Richard refuses to give: his heart. With the tension between them growing to be unbearable, David's seemingly incorruptible master has left him no choice. Putting his finely honed skills of seduction and manipulation to good use, he will convince Richard to forget all about his well-meaning objections and give in to sweet, sinful temptation.

Critic reviews

"This book is swoon material - grab it!" ( Red Adept Reviews)
"What I enjoyed most about this book was the author's slow and deliberate reveal of the story from both parties' perspectives." ( The Oddness of Moving Things)
"I absolutely loved this book. It was well written, it kept me engaged all the way throughout, and it was so good that I one-clicked the others in the series without even looking at the blurbs. I can safely say that this is one author that I will be reading more of in the future. If you love Regency era-romance and books that really tug on your heart, this is definitely one to check out." Wonderful and intriguing

Fantastic series with well developed characters who have to grow and learn from their mistakes. This story is heartfelt and beautiful. The issues of sexual harassment in the workplace is always of interest and relevant in any age. But there is also the plot continuation from the previous books that kept the action going in the book too.
Fantastic writing as always from KJ Charles.
Narrator was amazing too. Such a range of voices and it was easy to forget it was someone reading a story and not a screenplay acted out in my head. I love when that happens.

Scintillating tale and glorious writing!

Absolutely Lovely! 5 Stars!

Superb writing, a risky plot, and complex characters create an absolutely engaging romance. This is my FAVORITE book of this regency series!

The Plot:
Like the previous two books in the series, members of the Ricardians find themselves in damnable, and precarious positions. Again, we have David Cyprian, Lord Richard's ever-resourceful valet, to the rescue, crafting a masterful escape for all. Richard and David dance around their desire for one another, fumbling along the way. The valet and the lord get their HEA, but only after working hard for it.

The Characters:
I absolutely LOVED Cyprian! He intrigued me in the first book and was so happy he got his own story and HEA with Lord Richard. You can feel the 'want' coming off the men in waves. Both men proved complex and true to the time period--Lord Richard entrenched in his beliefs of social class; Cyprian an honest product of his blemished past. I loved how they circled each other and that there was no-insta love; how the mores of the time truly affected their relationship.

The Writing:
Fabulous! Detailed description and sharp dialogue moved this story along. No cheese, no fluff. Just good writing.

The Heat:
Like I said, you could feel the desire each man had the other. Kisses were hot and angsty, the sex was surprising in that it went against what I had imagined--yay for surprises of the best kind. These two were hot together and it was wonderful seeing these two proper men get down and dirty on an equal playing field.

I adore this author!

Fav Narrator. Fav Author.

Always a winning pair! I never thought I could handle listening to another human being read romantic scenes, especially not scenes as steamy as the ones in this book. Yet, somehow this narrator makes blushing at my desk an absolute delight. I hope that KJ Charles works with him on future audiobooks. he's a treat

Sad To See The Series End

Another winner. The narrator does a great job, although I can't say I cared much for how he reads Ash. Ash has appeared in the prior books, but I don't recall him 'speaking' with a slight lisp as he does in this book. Other than that, all the characters were done quite well.

The author also does a great job with the plot. It doesn't seem plausible at first, with what we know of Lord Richard, that he would consider an affair with a servant, but because of what happened with Dominic in the prior book, I can see how Richard could slowly be changing his rigid moral viewpoint.

I wish there were more stories in this series. I'd read (listen) to anything written by K J Charles as long as it's read by Matthew Lloyd Davies.

I love David

I put off this book for months because I didn't like Richard in the previous 2, and I didn't want to see such a self-righteous man take up with his valet. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this, though. Though I never grew to like Richard, I did like him with David--for David.

On the other hand, I found myself uncomfortable with the lord/valet dynamic at times, which I had not anticipated. It seems David is happiest when serving, and he sticks up for his right to be happy in that work. I loved that--but I was uncomfortable with David remaining a secret even from Richard's closest friends. David puts his literal life at risk for these men, yet they demean his position and cannot be trusted to know he's Richard's lover. Ugh. This prevented me from fully enjoying their romance. The way Richard assumed it, the way David's immediate obedience to such degradation is romanticized... Bleck.

Luckily there's plenty else going on in the story to enjoy. David's mother, the clever schemes David gets up to, his self-worth and strength... OK, basically everything about David. The bits we see of Harry, Julius, Dom, and Mr. Werewolf are absolutely charming as well. Steamy scenes feel important and beautiful, as is typical of KJ Charles. Narration is great as always.

Terrific series, sad to see it end.

This has been such an interesting, entertaining, thought-provoking series. I've really enjoyed each book, and how everything flowed so smoothly between the 3 stories. Each has been unique, with the mystery tying it all together.

I was a little leery of Richard, it took awhile to warm up to him just because of his stand-offish attitude which I guess came with his station in life. That was not the case with David, though- I was a fan of his throughout the series.
I enjoyed the dynamic between Richard and David, even while I hated that it was wrong for them to be together! It was just so interesting seeing how life was during this time period.
I loved that David was so much more than *just* a valet, but because of his start in life he couldn't aspire to be more than that really, at least in the eyes of the public.
Richard was such a stickler for protocol, but when you grow up in that world you don't have much choice. I am glad that he finally opened himself up to David and let love in.

This was such a wonderful series, I'm sad to see it come to an end. I loved the audiobooks but I'll definitely be picking up the ebooks so I can revisit this group again.

Matthew Lloyd Davis was an outstanding narrator! The way he was able to keep each character's voice constant from book to book was incredible! And how he was able to give each character such distinct voices was truly impressive. I will definitely be looking into more books that he's narrated.

Delightful conclusion to this m/m romance series!

The enigmatic redhead and his reserved lord dance about one another in a way that feels true to the historical time period and leave you using at one or both of them when they are working against their own self interests, or at lest their hearts. It is a slow burn in the sense that they dare not indulge in their love for one another, but the affection is there from the first. With the returning cast of main and side characters from the first two books in the series I was in turns smitten, outraged, worried, and annoyed at various events, but it all ends with a realistic HEA. I love how KJ Charles writes historical fiction that feels real and doesn't gloss over the awkward or ugly parts of the worlds her characters live in.
