About this listen
Discover the most inspiring, thought-provoking, and encouraging stories of this beloved sport.
Did you know that basketball was invented as a way to keep boys entertained indoors during the harsh Northeastern winters?
Are you aware that the college basketball coach with the most wins is a woman who got her start playing basketball in her family’s barn?
Do you know why Stevie Wonder gave Darryl Dawkins the nickname Chocolate Thunder?
If you already know all of these stories, you may very well be a basketball wizard.
There are 2.2 billion basketball fans in the world. That’s over a quarter of the entire population of the world!
There are so many fans because basketball is more than just a game. For many, it is a way to root for their favorite players–to live vicariously through these players who can fly through the air. And for others, basketball is the way to a better life.
These 25 accounts share stories of courage, perseverance, and amazing feats all related to one of America’s favorite pastimes. Courage to change not only the landscape of the game but also of a country divided. Perseverance of players and teams who overcame great odds to become some of the greatest players in the world. Amazing feats of men who are almost superhuman in their basketball playing abilities. And these are just a few of the attributes covered in this charming collection of stories.
In this book, you will discover:
- The man who created basketball and how his original thirteen rules changed and evolved over the years
- What a “cager” is and how they stopped brawls from happening between both players and fans
- The player who convinced sports announcers to say he was from Planet Lovetron when introducing him at the beginning of games
- How one man went from being known as one of the angriest men in the NBA to being a champion for mental health
- A fan who was able to successfully sneak into the pregame warm-ups at an NBA game to become everyone’s hero

The Soul of Baseball is as much the story of Buck O'Neil as it is the story of baseball. Driven by a relentless optimism and his two great passions - for America's pastime and for jazz, America's music - O'Neil played solely for love. In an era when greedy, steroid-enhanced athletes have come to characterize professional ball, Posnanski offers a salve for the damaged spirit: the uplifting life lessons of a truly extraordinary man who never missed an opportunity to enjoy and love life.

Scottie Pippen has been called one of the greatest NBA players for good reason. Simply put, without Pippen, there are no championship banners - let alone six - hanging from the United Center rafters. There’s no Last Dance documentary. There’s no “Michael Jordan” as we know him. The 1990s Chicago Bulls teams would not exist as we know them. So how did the youngest of 12 go from growing up poor in the small town of Hamburg, Arkansas, enduring two family tragedies along the way, to become a revered NBA legend?

Awesome Book For a Basketball Enthusiast!
This book is a fantastic listen for anyone who loves basketball. It would make a tremendous gift for the basketball lover in your life. I enjoyed all the stories the author decided to explore, but my favorite chapter was about the Harlem Globetrotters. I remember my family taking me to see them when I was a kid and how entertaining they were. That chapter brought back some great memories. The narration of this audiobook was top-notch. The narrator is clear and conveys emotion well while telling the stories. I would recommend this book to any of my family and friends.

A must read for any basketball fan !!
I absolutely loved this book and how it portraits basketball: it’s an awesome sport and has had such a big impact on culture and so many generations! I learned so many new stories. I loved that the author made comments on games, shared stories on famous athletes while mentioning all the events that marked basketball history. It’s very easy to listen, with short stories, while being very fascinating and inspiring. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that loves basketball but also for anyone that has ever played, watched a game or simply if you want to learn more about basketball legends!

Many heartwarming stories of the silent heros
This was not what I expected it to be. I was expecting the 25 biggest names in basketball. What I got was some stories about the history of basketball and many stories of selfless players who made their teammates, their teams, and basketball itself bigger and better from their own kindnesses. Many of these stories were high school players and teams although some were indeed NBA players. An interesting look at the sport. But an even more interesting look at the kindness of men.
