About this listen

Out of the blue, that ornery angel, Detective Bobby Starr, shows up at The Owl’s Nest Couturier Shoppe. Much to Alexa Owl’s surprise, Bobby doesn’t need her help. Rather, he’s brought along someone else who wants to qualify for Saint Peter’s Guardian Angel Squad. Saint Pete has delegated this new inductee to solve a murder to get into the group, and it’s a doozie: Who killed Detective Bobby Starr? How can Alexa turn this assignment down?

Back in the 60s, Bobby’s fifth wife, Katherine, was a diva in a community operetta company. During a performance of The Merry Widow, Bobby was forced to stand-in for a member of the chorus who fell ill. Only, Bobby’s first performance would be his last! The suspects are hitting all the notes as this mystery comes to crescendo!

Fun series

I chose to listen to this book after receiving a free audio copy from iRead Book Tours. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

This is the fourth book in the Owl’s Nest Mysteries. They’re cozy mysteries that are quick reads that are full of humor. It even has time travel, angels and a murder (or 2 or 3) to solve.

I like the main character, Alexa. She’s an independent and brave woman who owns her own business. I found it interesting how she just takes everything in stride. Now that Bobby Starr has made Saint Peter’s Guardian Angel Squad, he’s brought another recruit who needs her help: Clifton Slater, who was the detective investigating Bobby’s murder! Slater and Alexa make a good team, and he seems to be a better detective than Bobby Starr.

I remember the first time I heard one of C.S. McDonald’s books. The narrator’s voice took a little getting used to, but once I did, I’ve always enjoyed Maren Swenson Waxenberg’s work. When I hear her voice, I think of C.S. McDonald’s books. Sadly, she has passed unexpectedly since working on this, her last work. My heart goes out to Maren Swenson Waxenberg’s family and friends.

I liked the ending of Felonious Finale. Everything came together with a little investigation by Slater and Alexa. This is a short but fun (and funny) mystery which I enjoyed.

The Best in this Series

My favorite of the four in this series by far! I chuckled out loud in various places. I enjoyed revisiting previous characters, but this cozy mystery/time travel gem can be read as a standalone. I rate it a 5.
