About this listen

Lady Kiera Darby and her dashing husband, Sebastian Gage, hope they've finally found peace after a tumultuous summer, but long-buried family secrets soon threaten to unravel their lives....

October 1832. Kiera is enjoying the slower pace of the English countryside. She, Sebastian, and their infant daughter have accompanied her father-in-law, Lord Gage, home so that he can recuperate from the injuries he sustained in a foiled attempt on his life. But as the chill of autumn sweeps across the land, they receive a summons from an unexpected quarter. Lord Gage's estranged uncle—a member of the notorious Roscarrock family—has been murdered, and his family is desperate for answers. Despite Lord Gage's protests, Kiera and Sebastian press on to Cornwall to assist.

It isn't long before they discover that almost nothing is as it seems among the Roscarrocks, and they've been lured to their isolated cove under false pretenses. There are whispers of a lost treasure and frightening allusions to a series of murders stretching back decades that touch the lives of the family personally. Kiera and Sebastian are left with no choice but to uncover the truth before the secrets of the past threaten to destroy them all.

The action and family dynamics

I cannot believe that this is the 12th lady Darby mystery that I have read. I really think it’s the best one today Ms. Huber just keeps getting better and better.

Lord Gage becomes human!

I really enjoyed learning about Lord Gage and the journey to humanize him. As always, the narrator is my favorite and is the reason I choose the audio book over the ebook.

Compelling and emotional

Most I enjoyed; at first I was put off by the narrator’s tendency to sound overly snobbish for the character. This improved greatly after the first chapters, and then was done well thereafter.

For love of family

This installment of the Lady Darby series was a most excellent one. We learn a lot more about Lord Gage, Sebastian's father, when the family travels back to one of Lord Gage's family homes. Upon receiving a letter from his aunt, Lord Gage is disinclined to going back but is persuaded by Kiera and Sebastian to go. Upon arriving, strange things begin to happen, and they soon realize they have been lured there under false pretenses. What I liked most in this story was seeing Lord Gage finally drop the wall between Kiera and himself, and embrace her wholly as his daughter -in- law. There was action and treachery in this story. The usual side characters of Bree, Anderly, and Mrs. Mckay were there to lend support and even little Emma had a part to play. It was an excellent read.

I so enjoyed the love and closeness of the two of them. The excitement of each mystery they solved. the idea that they kept their family close never leaving their child behind. they determination for them to bring the father-in-law into the fold of love and family. I truly enjoy all of her books looking forward to the next.
