About this listen

In a time of chaos, the number one New York Times best-selling political humorist asks his fellow Americans to take it down a notch.

Is there an upside to being woke (and unable to get back to sleep)? If we license dentists, why don't we license politicians? Is your juicer sending fake news to your FitBit about what's in your refrigerator?

The legendary P. J. O'Rourke addresses these questions and more in this hilarious new collection of essays about our nation's propensity for anger and perplexity, which includes such gems as "An Inaugural Address I'd Like to Hear" (Ask not what your country can do for you, ask how I can get the hell out of here) and "Sympathy vs. Empathy", which contemplates whether it's better to hold people's hands or bust into their heads. Also included is a handy quiz to find out where you stand on the Coastals vs. Heartlanders spectrum. From the author of Parliament of Whores, None of My Business, and other modern classics, this is a smart look at the current state of these United States and a plea to everyone to take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy a few good laughs.

very entertaining

As usual the author is an entertaining miss that curmudgeony "old man" humor often wrapped in well applied sarcasm.

From my perspective, he hits the nail on the head. No sacred cows on any side of the political walls society erects.

Favorite section: "good Democrat" vs "good Republican"
How I wish politicians treated each other and the public that they are supposed to represent!
Differences are an important part of choice and the exercise of democracy, however those differences should not be turned into some big scary caricature in attempt to paint one side or the other as "bad"...

As he has said himself he is "libertarian" but not in the sense of the caricature people have created to l paint their images of Libertarians or what I think is more accurate, libertarian philosophy. So left or right, he has much to say that you will agree with and much to say that you will disagree with, depending on your perspectives. That is unless you just happen to be an (extreme) centrist yourself, in that case it's just an enjoyable read with a few things that you may not have considered...

P. J. Retired but he's still typing.

I have most of his other books. This just sucks. He could not even be bothered to read it like others. Not witty. Not funny. I finished it only because I didn't have another one teed up. If you like PJ. don't bother with this.

Dreadfully unfunny

Was a fan of PJ in the old days, his books were interesting including his exploits and takes on politics and world events, and hugely funny to boot. This book is dreadful and just falls flat. It’s so bad I just can’t finish it.
