About this listen
Many of us know and love the stories and characters of the Old Testament, such as Joseph, Moses, and Jonah. But how do we view its importance in relation to New Testament teaching and our 21st-century experiences? This accessible yet powerful addition to the Pocket Guide series draws together the threads of Scripture to help us understand the power of God's word when viewed in its completeness.

Story
A lifelong pursuit of knowing God should embody the Christian's existence. According to eminent theologian J.I. Packer, however, Christians have become enchanted by modern skepticism and have joined the "gigantic conspiracy of misdirection" by failing to put first things first. Knowing God aims to redirect our attention to the simple, deep truth that to know God is to love His Word.

How did the world arrive at its current, disorienting state of identity politics, and how should the church respond? Historian Carl R. Trueman discusses how influences ranging from traditional institutions to technology and pornography moved modern culture toward an era of "expressive individualism." Investigating philosophies from the Romantics, Nietzsche, Marx, Wilde, Freud, and the New Left, he outlines the history of Western thought to the distinctly sexual direction of present-day identity politics and explains the modern implications of these ideas.

Story
From Genesis to Revelation, the providence of God directs the entire course of redemptive history. Providence is “God’s purposeful sovereignty”. Its extent reaches down to the flight of electrons, up to the movements of galaxies, and into the heart of man. Its nature is wise and just and good. And its goal is the Christ-exalting glorification of God through the gladness of a redeemed people in a new world.

The difference between Ironside's treatment of the subject is that after making his case for the Eternal Security of the Believer, he deals carefully with verses in the Bible which would seem to teach otherwise.

Story
Though most Christians refrain from predicting exactly when our world will end, many believe that when Earth's finale does arrive, it will be a catastrophe. Details vary, but the general assumption is the same: Things will get much, much worse before they get better. But is this really what the Bible teaches? Leaving aside the theological terms that often confuse and muddle this question, Douglas Wilson instead explains eschatology as the end of the greatest story in the world.

When God-in-the-flesh showed up twenty centuries ago in Palestine, the religious PhDs rejected him and the prostitutes and social outcasts flocked to him. Why? . . Because the open welcome of divine grace that Jesus offers, open to anyone who would simply leave their moral resume at home, is not predictable. It is not safe. It is subversive. . .

Story
What is meant by the "Great Tribulation?" Will the church endure the tribulation? Is the rapture a tenable belief? H.A. Ironside contrasts the judgment of God with salvation to determine the basis for the events of the future. He introduces biblical prophecy, connects to historical events, and offers an exhaustive biblical survey of the Great Tribulation. Most importantly, Ironside explains that the Great Tribulation differs from God's wrath or fury. Ultimately God’s judgment and wrath - and the events of the tribulation - are overcome by salvation and love.

Excellent, Outstanding, Awesome, Praiseworthy, WOW
What made the experience of listening to A Christian's Pocket Guide to Loving the Old Testament the most enjoyable?
The first book, I've listened to that actually delivers what is promised. A fresh love for God and the Old Testament. I love everything about this book it has really brought a personal revival to me. Thank you God for causing this man to put pen to paper and clearing up all these things for us in this generation.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Christian's Pocket Guide to Loving the Old Testament?
The beginning, then middle and the end. God of Origins, I love when He explained that and when He explained the Lord of Hosts, it hit me that we are the HOSTS! The old testament is our heritage. We are the true Israel of God, not Christians! I've known these things in my heart but it's nice to hear confirmation from someone so well rehearsed in the scriptures.
What about Ralph Lister’s performance did you like?
I love the English accent. I've always loved that accent it gives kind of a vintage feel to it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
YES, and I did!
Any additional comments?
