Story
The “modern” education system. It hasn't changed much since it started back in 1837. The same rules apply. You come into class, pick a seat, and watch an adult teach you the basics. The rest is left to the child. Whether they pay attention or not, it's up to them. The problem here is, even if the child tries to pay attention, many find it difficult to learn this way.

Daniella Martin, entomophagist and blogger, can. In this rollicking excursion into the world of edible insects, Martin takes us to the front lines of the next big trend in the global food movement and shows us how insects just might be the key to solving world hunger. Edible will radically change the way you think about the global food crisis and perhaps persuade you that insects are much more than a common pest.

Story
Japan is arguably the preeminent food nation on earth, a Mecca for the world's greatest chefs, with more Michelin stars than any other country. The Japanese go to extraordinary lengths and expense to eat food that is marked both by its exquisite preparation and exotic content. Their creativity, dedication, and courage in the face of dishes such as cod sperm and octopus ice cream is only now beginning to be fully appreciated in the sushi and ramen-saturated West.

Story
In thinking about her native land, Julia Reed quotes another Southern writer, Willie Morris, who said, “It’s the juxtapositions that get you down here.” These juxtapositions are, for Julia Reed, the soul of the South and in her warmhearted and funny new audiobook, South Toward Home, she chronicles her adventures through the highs and the lows of Southern life - the Delta hot tamale festival, a masked ball, a rollicking party in a boat on a sand bar, scary Christian billboards, and the southern affection for the lowly possum.

Story
American food is the story of mash-ups. Immigrants arrive, cultures collide, and out of the push-pull come exciting new dishes and flavors. But for Edward Lee, who, like Anthony Bourdain or Gabrielle Hamilton, is as much a writer as he is a chef, that first surprising bite is just the beginning. What about the people behind the food? What about the traditions, the innovations, the memories? A natural-born storyteller, Lee decided to hit the road and spent two years uncovering fascinating narratives from every corner of the country.

At 28, Jessica Fechtor was happily immersed in graduate school and her young marriage and thinking about starting a family. Then one day she went for a run, and an aneurysm burst in her brain. She nearly died. She lost her sense of smell and the sight in her left eye and was forced to the sidelines of the life she loved. Jessica's journey to recovery began in the kitchen as soon as she was able to stand at the stovetop and stir. There, she drew strength from the restorative power of cooking and baking.

Story
We live in a place everyone calls paradise. Sure, Kauai’s beautiful, with empty beaches, drip-castle mountains, and perfect surf...but we’ve been "camping" for six months, eating boiled chicken feed for breakfast, and wearing camouflage clothes so no one sees us trespassing in our jungle hideout. The cockroaches leave rainbow colors all over everything from eating the crayons we left outside the tent, and now a tractor is coming to scrape our camp into the river. Standing in front of the tent in my nightgown, I know my own truth: I just want to be normal.

Cute narration
I think what captured my attention were the kid narrators. They did such a great job and because they are related, I feel my son and his friend were more engaged.

This book is lovely and can be used by all ages
This is a great one to use in the classroom. I'm using it with my first and second grade math group, and the age seems about right. The focus throughout is grouping or regrouping in order to solve the problems in different ways.

Great aftercare activity
I've played this a few times to a group of 5-10 kids, and they really seem to enjoy it. The timing after each question really gets each one of them thinking and wanting to answer faster than their friends, it's hilarious!

Informative book
It gave me a chance to educate my kids. I loved the book and my kids loved the book too!! Easy enough for kids, yet not boring for adults. They make you think for sure, but the answer usually ends up being something simple! It gives great family time together!
